Probably Conan. Unless No Man's Sky counts, but there's nothing like thirst that you will inherently die from just by sitting still forever, you just have to deal with environmental danger.

I'm not sure if I should put this or not...lol

For real though I can't say I can think of many I've played. I've probably played ones I really liked and can't think of. But I do remember playing and enjoying Don't Starve.

Most of the games I play are RPGs and farming sims though, so maybe I haven't played a different one tbh.

Minecraft.

I'm not a huge fan of games with survival mechanics. I generally don't play them unless they've got something HUGELY significant as a secondary game mechanic to recommend them, and even then, I tend to bypass them as much as possible and just focus on the other thing.

It also doesn't help that a lot of them are on servers with expected/mandatory multiplayer, because the only thing less appealing than survival is survival where other players can grief your shit.

I hated it as a kid, but I sure love it now.

As an aside: anyone recommend a camera and lens for doing macro pics? I like taking pics of bugs

minecraft definitely does survival best IMO. it's not my favorite game, but no game I've played does survival better. the feeling of living in a small hut you've built with zombies right outside looking for a way in while you carve out your basement waiting for the sun to come up... good times.

As much as I love Minecraft I think Don't Starve is the better survival game. In Minecraft you can take your sweet time and be god-like eventually, but in Don't Starve you always feel like time is against you. Plus it has multiple bosses and permadeath.

You mean Survival games?

"Survival" is a game genre.

I'm not a big fan of games without a story, so the only one I've played at length is Minecraft a long time ago.

How so?
I couldn't imagine watching someone chop down hundreds of trees and go spear fishing and shit.

Sure, it's fun watching someone work their way through the caves but outside of that there is a lot of monotony. IMO the game does a very good job of creating tension too, even when playing multiplayer. Especially at night. It's legitimately dark and the cannibals can sneak up on you really quick. I don't think I've ever jumped harder at a game than when I was sitting at a temporary camp in the forest at night and one of those fuckers jumped out of a tree next to my tent/tiny little campfire. A lot of that is lost when you're just watching it.

Besides, if nothing else, sledding on turtle shells is fun as fuck and totally worth experiencing yourself.

Survival mechanics don't terribly interest me but, if we're counting something like Skyrim for whatever reason, then Skyrim. I believe there's a game mod or something for it that would turn it to that kind of a game which, given that it's still Skyrim, would likely be enjoyable for being Skyrim.

Skyrim.

I love the adventure mode.

There is just something delightfully absurd about reading about your characters (usually hilariously failed) exploits in the books of a tower, or depicted on pottery or something.

I always start my adventure mode by finding the nearest vampire and drinking their blood.

Yeah Dwarf Fortress is a great game. I got a little tired of the graphic style and didn't want to bother messing with graphic sets so I kind of fell out of it.

Rimworld hits the same reward center in my brain so I'm all over it.

I actually just tried the Minecraft demo for the first time, which is funny with how old it is and how long I've been interested in trying it. And how many games I've played which were obviously derived from it, like Terraria. I need to buy it when I have money and go have myself an old school adventure.

Other favorites are Starbound, Don't Starve, Ark (For a while, I haven't gotten back to that game in a long time), Oxygen Not Included, watching my husband play Subnautica.

There's a decent little indie game out there called Rise to Ruins that has had a lot of stuff added to it since I last played.

I get super obsessive with games that involve building and surviving.
