49 y/o Chinese Immigrant, Li Xi Wang who lived in California was SHOT DEAD after a marijuana drug bust..and police shot him because he didn't understand what they were saying as he spoke NO ENGLISH!!

They were searching his home for suspicion of illegal drug activity as the single father has been in the US since 2005 but did not speak english according to family lawyer Daniel Deng

Deng sid "He could have believed he was being robbed"

His only involvement in the drug trafficking operation was to watch the marijuana as now they have filed a claim against the city of Chino with intent to sue for damages

He was hired only to take care of the marijuana but that he wasn't a drug dealer nor smuggler as he was a simple worker trying to make a living by caring for marijuana

Body camera footage shows armed cops searching several rooms while calling out in English and Spanish to anyone hiding to come out and as officers walked past Wang while he was hiding behind an opened door, an officer says "I'm gonna..." and it stops mid-way when he noticed Wang and said "Let me see your hands, dude" before a single shot his fired..then the cop says "Oh s***, f*** shots fired" as Wang slumps to the floor

The San Bernadino County Sheriff's Office will determine if the shooting was lawful as they are also leading the drug trafficking investigation

Brian Dunn, another family lawyer said the shooting violated protocols to use deadly force because Wang didn't pose a threat and had nothing in his hands.

53 y/o Ai Yue Cai, a woman who was living there was arrested. She too doesn't speak english

If he didn't speak English and I'm assuming he couldn't speak Spanish either (because they also issued the orders in Spanish), who exactly was running this drug ring? Does the Triad have much presence in the US's marijuana trade?

You make it sound like he had no involvement in their operations while simultaneously acknowledging his involvement.

But how did he react when the cops confronted him? We know that he couldn't speak English so the verbal command couldn't be understood, but there's a bit in there where the lawyer talks about "He could have believed he was being robbed" that makes me wonder what he was doing in response. I'm also wondering how much recon the cops did beforehand. The fact that the suspects spoke Chinese seems to be something that they should have known before going into the raid.

What are they teaching in the police academy these days? There was a time where you had to physically pose a threat before police could use deadly force. Now you flirt with death just by giving some cops a dirty look.

While you have largely insular communities in certain areas (Chinatown being the most immediate example, especially since he lived in California) and services that offer support for people who don't want to learn a language, it's still a good question. At a certain point, it seems like you'd *have* to pick up something.

On one hand, you have an English speaker living in a country where a majority of people speak English. On the other, you have a Chinese speaker, who has been unable to or unwilling to learn either of the two most used languages in the country and possibly lives in a secular community that speaks his native tongue.

How do you compare the two? In what way is having to stay in a secular community to be understood not a shitty way to go through life?

I pointed out that in 15 years, he hasn't learned another language. I implied nothing. I demanded nothing. If an immigrant doesn't want to learn some of the common languages of the country in which they reside, that's their prerogative. But, as I said earlier in the thread, limiting yourself to a community that speaks the same language as you in a country that does not isn't a particularly enjoyable way to live. At least in my opinion.

Not really arbitrary. Your forgetting the immigrants aren't kids. They didn't have the opportunity for American schooling in 10 years or free programs without the fear of deportation. And in this situation they're surrounded by fellow native speakers.

And that's great. But, as I've said again and again, if you're only speaking your native tongue in a country that doesn't speak it, you're drastically limiting yourself in terms of where you can go or who you are able to communicate with.

If they're happy that way, great. But it doesn't seem like an enjoyable way to live life.

honestly a lot of these stories just make some police seem like cowards

i mean if the guy had a gun in his hand or was running at the officer then yeah you should probably shoot him

theres no reason to use deadly force though when you dont even know if a person is a threat. Some folks should not be in law enforcement.

No. It's not the same.

1.) language acquisition is easier when younger
2.) a 15 year old america will speak english every day and be surrounded by people who speak english every day in most situations. It's likely that this person spent most of his time speaking chinese with people who also could speak chinese to him. If you live in a community where you don't need to speak English to communicate, it's trivial to survive without it.

That's the problem. It's not acceptable to make an insular culture inside another country. It was a choice for them to block out their host country and it's ridiculous that it has been allowed.

Even on an individual level, he's always had the option to go out and meet people outside Chinatown and learn the host language, but he chose to segregate himself from the country and in the end, his decisions got him shot.
