They've been without one for like 2 months, and she has been doing the duties of the assistant manager without fail since that time. She was the only one whose interview wasn't with the big boss of the region, everyone else got their interview with the regional manager but he wasn't there for the gf's.

She knows the store like the back of her hand, she already does all the work of the assistant manager, but doesn't get the pay. Then they start to hire and she doesn't get the spot.

It's fuckin dumb. I'm mega pissed

Oh I know it's common. But I almost exclusively only ever hear it thrown around by miserable, burnt out men in their 40s who hate their wives.

Only person I know who doesn't match that description is a good friend of mine who uses it referring to his NEET girlfriend of 10 years that dropped out of high school around the same time and just watches Netflix and uses her welfare money to buy hentai and Taco Bell.

The manager to my gf for literally the last three months: "You're gonna be the next assistant manager, so we're teaching you all these things for that specific purpose. Wish we had more employees like you."

The gf: "sick, I'm down, train me" *proceeds to almost literally run the store for 3 months*

Manager: *hires someone else*

Don't take on extra duties until you've been given compensation for said duties (or at the very least had it promised in writing).

I've seen this happen multiple times at places I've worked. Either a person that was skilled and responsible was passed over for someone whose only talent was kissing ass, or they brought in someone from outside the location who might have been promising but didn't know what they were getting themselves into and ended up like a fish out of water until they eventually left or got fired.

It's pretty stupid, and it's greasy to promise people things or to act like you are setting them up for success just to get free labour (someone to handle the duty of being assistant manager without the pay). Happened to me once, now I don't bother trying much anymore.
