Its a sign that people recognize your humanity and enjoy you being around, which is a type of intimacy.

This terrifies people because if people like them, it means they can stop liking them. This opens up new emotional vulnerabilities that arent there when you remain distant.

It can also be a symptom of imposter syndrome. When youre used to not being appreciated, the sudden onset of people liking you makes you question what caused the change, and if they actually like you, or some sort of manufactured persona you created to function in society.

Of course I just made all this up. Could be anything, lol.
