86% approval, but bloody hell an average score of 9.26. Also lots of oscar buzz for Joaquin Phoenix.

Another good DC movie and WB finally released a great movie this year! Hooray!

Really hope this is a good villain movie and not just a predictable sympathetic serial killer story

But I'll update my thoughts from "skeptical" to "cautiously optimistic"

Well Wonder Woman was critically acclaimed, Aquaman got decent reviews, and Shazam got great reviews (actually that's a great WB movie from this year, forgot about that one). DC films have already been turned around, this just cements it.

Really the only issues they had were Zack Snyder and giving a trailer company final cut of Suicide Squad...

This was preemptively jeered to death by the Internet, it seems. I wonder if it will actually get good word of mouth.

Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam are all great, so DC has already had its positive turn. This will just cement it IMO.

Calling Aquaman a success is like calling Thor 2 a success. Sure, decent reviews, but I wouldn't say they equate to an upward trend. Wonder Woman was good, but they hadn't hit their stride yet. Between Shazam and now Joker in the same year, that is what I mean by I think DC is making a positive turn. I'm hoping anyway as a big fan of the company.

LMAO, by every metric that matters, Aquaman was a success.

I wasn't looking at box office. Just reviews. I said it was decently reviewed, but didn't indicate an upward trend (actually downward, given it proceeded WW). My Thor 2 comparison was that because on imdb, rotten tomatoes, and metacritic, the score of each of them differentiates by 1 point on a 100 scale on all three sites.

It proceeded WW but also proceeded Justice League more immediately. So it was still upwards. It also reviewed better than 4/5 of the previous DC films... Aquaman is the weakest of the good DC films but it is still one of those films.

You are definitely correct about this. I think my mistake is that I was holding DC to Marvel's standards, and to me, DC hitting a high note was essentially the same as what others considered to be a Marvel low note. And as a DC fan, I just didn't consider that good enough. In my mind, it didn't continue the trend set by WW. With Shazam and now Joker, Joker is what solidifies it as an upward trend. All in my opinion of course. I think it's just really good news, and it leaves me very excited for the future.

Whoa whoa Aquaman was leagues better than Thor 2.

I will take a disjointed, corny, pulpy adventure movie that's actually fun to a serviceable snoozefest any day.

Yeah, I'm going to watch this one, but with low expectations. At the bare minimum it looks guaranteed to be fun to talk about

Also, you guys are using the word preceded incorrectly and it's driving me nuts

While I would generally say don't set your expectations too high for anything, but this is an odd response to critical acclaim and major awards wins. Also the word used is proceeded, the opposite of preceded.

I really hate this trend of people shitting on media solely because of who likes it. Or, in this case, who might like it once it actually releases. It's cringe culture at its worst and most disruptive.

I'm reminded of when damn-near-every online discussion about Rick and Morty was being hijacked, for over a solid year, by idiots spamming the "high IQ" copypasta and beating the Szechuan Sauce incident to death. By all means, hate Rick and Morty, but hating and incessantly whining about it because of the fanbase is such a boneheaded reason.

Scarlet is absolutely right - "Stop caring about the internet" is always good advice. But I see this type of talk seeping into IRL discourse more and more, and that makes it tougher not to be bothered by.

Still pumped as hell for Joker, at any rate. The trailers have been wonderful. Beyond Phoenix, I'm also stoked to see Zazie Beetz' performance. She rules!

The Joker trailers have been my favorite movie previews since....I can't even remember. If the film lives up to them then it will be movie of the year. And I generally can't stand comic book adaptations.
