Stay safe CEFloridians. When Irma came to the Virgin Islands, torrential floods were the least of people's problems. You'll probably get flooded out, but that's okay. The fear of losing your roof or a tree or electric pole was the biggest concern. I fortunately came out fine because I live in a valley and live in a dense neighborhood where other houses took most of the blow for me, in terms of water. And my roof stayed in tact. But others weren't so lucky. A lot of people's roofs and subsequently homes were destroyed. What's even worse, was that there were people living on apartment complexes that were higher up in hills got direct blasts from winds, where people got sucked out of their homes. Then there was also the threat of tornadoes forming and flinging debris from one area to another. There was a solar panel farm situated on one side of a hill, and ended up finding themselves on the other side on people's door mats.

I can't comment on whether to stay or go, but expect a apocalyptic disaster at this level.

From this point forward, I feel like any peak-season storm that spends a significant amount of time over water without strong hindrance (dry air, wind shears, etc) will easily creep up to a 4 or 5. A week ago I didn't believe even the local forecasters (who have a vested interest in delivering correct info and not sensationalizing, since they actually live here too) when they expected it to top out as a Cat 2.

Looks to be following a similar path to Matthew, thank God; can only continue hoping it goes a step further and stays offshore completely. SW Florida's been out of the cone for a couple days now and I can breathe easier. Still, I won't relax completely until it's passed.

Why are they so sure that it's gonna make that sharp turn up the coast now? Earlier models had it going right through Florida. Is it because it slowed down?

From my understanding its because theres an area of high pressure thats stopping it from going north, so once it slips past that it should start going north.

It's not going to hit FL

It was supposed to hit Puerto Rico. But then it turned and went right over the VI and became a Category 2 Hurricane in the process. Don't underestimate the hurricane. Nothing is set in stone.

The eye, may be not depends on when it turns.

Were still going to get a lot of damage on the east coast though.

At least with regard to wind damage the severity is significantly lower than when it was scheduled to slam into Vero Beach.

Rain and surge are up in the air.

Hurricanes generally travel from east to west because of global trade winds unless impeded by land. So it's unlikely to be a problem unless it stays in form and hits Hawaii or some other land mass.

That's Juliette. It's a cat 3, but it should just be going out to sea and not impacting anywhere.
