It's on sale right now for $28 and there is a bundle for $36 which comes with a few things

How hard is it to make games? Is the stand alone game enough to hold me over until the next sale to see if I want to drop more money into it, or should I just get the package?

There is another package for $187, but that's way too much for me to see if I like the game or not

I'd suggest watching some youtube videos about it. It's a great piece of software but it can be difficult to use at first.

I'm too stupid to do D&D by myself with paper, can't figure out how to use paint to make good graph maps. Zero clue how to program a quick thing to do D&D that way by myself

So I'll just make my RPGs with this. Hopefully

This almost entirely to make my D&D World. First time DM, and I don't know how to draw or use computers to make nice maps. So I'm going to use this easy thing. And it gives me an added bonus of fleshing out lore while I go as well

What I really want to do with it is to make a Tactical game [FFT, Fire Emblem], but you can't make those with this game. At least I don't think you can

Also, if I get good at it, it might fun to make a CE game, lol

Ive played them all. Well, all of the English language ones at least. Its probably my favorite genre of video game, countless hours, and Ive never finished anything. But thats not what I really set out to do. Its a toolset. And truly, there arent that many limits on them at all once you get deep enough. For some of them at least. 3 on the PS2 has some crippling limitations, as does the recent 3ds one. But MV is solid. Theres also an incredibly strong community, and they all love other people loving it. Youll stumble across the better forums soon enough if you havent already.

MV is his enough to make legitimate professional games with, if you have the time and patience.

On the topic, I'm actually working on my own indie game using MV. Like, legit from the ground up. Game design takes SO much fucking time though when you're doing it by yourself. Been at it for like a year and I'm maybe 15% done lol. I'm hoping to focus more on it after my wedding is over and I have more time to devote to it again.

Thanks for all the posts!

It's a lot of deal with at first, lol. What is the last option in the window? Okay, not the best way to ask the question. In the last window for tiles for me is a lot of colors and when I place them on the map it gives it a number. What are those?

And I know this is a stupid question, but what IS the first piece of land I start out with? Is it the world map like in Final Fantasy Tactics or even Super Mario 3 and World?

Also, any good advice on graphic mods for the vanilla game? I see I can et a LOT of ones on the Steam Workshop, but are there free ones? Are there any good shortcuts I should be using? I know about Right-Click will 'fill' my Left-Click. Example would be how do I select all 4 tiles of town so I can lay the whole thing down instead of having to place down each corner?

I'm really starting to pick this up now. Well, the map making part of it. I wish I picked this up at the start of the Summer when I was bored. I never knew it could be so easy

Hopefully the rest falls into place as well. I have set up my first town [sorta] and gave the people some dialogue

Questions -

1] How can I tel if an icon is able to walk on or if it's something solid. I know on the World Map you can set what it is, but I don't know how to with this little town I just made. I can't tell if the brick is a wall or a floor, for example

2) Can I change the color of these pre-set stuff?

I think if you're using the preset map tools, the collision detection is automatic.

That said, you can use use plugins to set restrictions on where players/NPCs can and can't go.

If you're talking about what I think you are, all those colors and numbers are zones. You can do things with them like set certain enemy encounters to certain zones. For instance, often when crossing bridges in RPGs, enemies get tougher. On one side of the bridge is zone 1 with slimes, on the other side is zone 2 with super slimes or whatever.

And you can go into some kind of tile set management window to see what you can and cant walk through. Tiles have little symbols in this screen, likes x and o, which indicate their status, and you can change them.

I made a few erotica games using this. >_>

I'm having such a hard time trying to find the same icons/tiles I've used before. I know all about Right-Clicking on something to put that on the Left-Click, but you can't do that between maps

Well, my brother is going to be the first one to play whatever I cook up. He's been married for almost two years now and he has a son that just turned 8 months. So I was just going to kind of make a funny game about his son being chosen for some great hero quest. Nothing special, just a fun Christmas gift if I'm clever enough to put it together

I've run into an issue. I place a jar on the map that has a Potion in it. But when I go to play the game, the jar isn't there. The others are, even the one that I made that heals your HP/MP, but this one just doesn't show up on the map

What are the event settings on the jar. if you accidently clicked a switch or variable requirement that would cause it to not show up.

The jar shows up now, but it will not give me my Potion I put in it. I did once, but then it disappeared, and then it showed up again all without me doing anything new, lol

i dunno how it works in MV, but what i did in older RPG maker games is have the end of the event (in this case, your Old Man event) turn on a switch. then, i would make a new event page in that event that is only active when that switch is on.

so the event would be something like:

(trigger event)
Old Man: Yo take this sword
>add sword to inventory
>turn on 'Sword Obtained' switch
(end)


the 'Sword Obtained' switch would make the second event page on the Old Man event the active event, which will now play out like this:

(trigger event)
Old Man: Nice sword, innit?
(end)


looking at the screenshot you posted (ZcK9Z5U) i would guess that you can do this with the "Self Switch" option.

Activate a self switch after it gives the potion, make a second page that triggers once the self-switch turns on and make the second page blank. If you right click on a square in the even map layout, and click the quick event treasure it does it for you, you just set what the container image and the item it gives.

So I got the jar to give me a Potion again, but it gives me one over and over again. I didn't actually set up an Old Man to give me a sword, lol, I should have used this pot as the example still

I see the Switch tabs, but no idea how to use them. I assume we're talking about - "If the Switch has been activated [I've got the Potion] that the Event won't happen anymore," but I don't know how to set it up yet

Did you figure it out? The explanation Hiei posted was good, but I just want to clarify one thing. There isn't a switch called "Sword Obtained" that you need to look for. The switches don't have names by default, you have to label them. So in his example he picked an unnamed switch and labeled it that, which makes sense. In your case I'd go with something like "Got Potion" but you can name it whatever you want. After you turn on your switch after giving the player the potion, create a new page. Under conditions, you'll see Switch. Select your switch and then you can go from there. Something like a message saying "The jar is empty." might be good.

Not yet, I went to sleep after that post, or near to it. Just woke up and that's my goal today. Do my first quest. I already have all of the characters in place [A king hurt at the mountain, the boss, and the guard back at the castle gate that will not let me in until the King comes back

Order of Events -

* Find out I need to see the King
* Can't enter the castle until the King comes back
* Climb mountain to find King hurt
* Asks me to return his sword from the creature that took it
* Fight boss and get Sword
* Take it back to the King
* Get inside of Castle

So I assume I need to figure out how to place a "Trigger" to see if the King has been saved, and a "Trigger" to see if I killed the Boss and have the sword. That's my goal right now. Wish me luck!

Ohh, and I very badly need to learn about the damage calculations for my skills. I wrote down the aberrations for the basic stuff, but still don't know if I'm doing it correctly. Let's so a Big Sword Swing for example, something that hits all the mobs like Slash All from Final Fantasy VII. This is the damage formula I put in -> a.level+a.atk*70% - b.def meaning that I take my Level 3 add that to my attack [3+10] and times it by 70% [9.1] and subtract that from the mobs defense [4] = 5.1 damage to all mobs. I think. I don't know if that's correct. Don't know if where and if I need spaces in the formula and if the math is correctly laid out

Im used to RPG Maker XP so not sure if this carries over...

But to handle NPCs and other events changing as you progress and do/collect things I tie it to a single variable called Story_Step.

So when you accomplish a key story progression the variable is increased by one.

Then in an event you can creat multiple pages (top left I believe) and just set the trigger for that page as variable Story_Step = x. This will make a single NPC/event change as the story progresses.

Yeah having one big main "story variable" is the way to go, instead of having a ton of different switches and what not. Just start that variable at zero and increase it with each new major event you do.
