I appalled how most of the thread is just ignoring the fact that he's a repeat offender that didn't learn his lesson the first three times.

so permanent imprisonment for a non serious crime being repeated?

If he didn't learn his lesson the last three times he isn't going to learn it period.

so, again... locking him away forever over minor theft is the solution?

Wasn't a minor theft, it was a felony, his fourth in fact. The police will lock you up for victim-less crimes so why should a crime involving actual victims be treated less-seriously.

you understand that you're making an argument for the exact opposite of what your conclusion is. right? we shouldn't be jailing people for victimless crimes either

If youve been convicted a couple times for petit larceny it becomes a burglary charge. Probably what happened to him. Idiot doesnt learn his lesson but he needs to be released. We wouldnt even arrest for that

Shoplifting is a felony?

It is when it's a repeat offense. It would have been a misdemeanor otherwise.

Not necessarily, just that, if the original price is above a certain threshold you can be charged with a felony as well. That means if the original price of suit was $1000 but they always sell it for $60, you'll be charged with stealing a $1000 suit.

I seriously doubt you want the general public to own "military styled fully--semiautomatic assault weapons" Which itself is a victimless crime.

I was looking at the appeal and one of their arguments was the price, so it played some role, at least in the defenses' mind.

Yeah. If it's what I'm thinking they attempted to argue that the prosecution failed to establish the value of the jacket. The court threw that out because the value was determined by the tag. It was well under what would be considered a misdemeanor on the first offense.

It was only a felony because he was a repeat offender with a conviction of violent crime. (And I repeat: We are deliberately not being given details of what that consisted of because we are being fed a story to fit the narrative that he was given life imprisonment over a $200 jacket. He was not. It was his fourth felony conviction over a 16 year period.)

I'm talking about his previous offenses. The robbery conviction that is deliberately being left out of this story constituted a violent crime. He has two other burglary convictions as well.

If he was a homeless dude that needed a jacket he could have went to Goodwill or the Salavation Army. After going by the office and getting a voucher, they would have given him a free jacket and a few other clothing items.

If he committed 4 felonies in 16 years with 1 being violent then maybe he does need life. But it sucks that he didn't get more mental help before being released last time.

Thats not true at all. My state offers tons of rehabilitation programs, Ive been in them. Youve probably never even been arrested, you only base your opinion off shit you see online.

Theres probably something extra about this case, that isnt mentioned, although i wouldnt defend Louisiana's incarceration techniques. Locking people up should be a last resort.

Yeah one im about to go to work at least offers schooling but I was told thr sad truth is the majority dont take it. I mean free college classes and they pass it up. I kinda feel like it should be required unless they already have some kinda degree or are gonna be in for life anyways..

Sure more could be done but most arent even taking whats already there.

Thats unfair. Look at it this way: the United States has more prisoners per capita than any country. Know what else we have the most of? Criminals. We have more violence and crime than any other country. So how do you fix that?

Fuck if I know. But locking people up is not the answer. Some people deserve to do time, thats true. But rehabilitation should be the priority, because in most cases, those people are gonna be out on the streets again. If you treat people like animals, they will Act like animals.

To me, even if it was his fourth strike, this man does not deserve to do life. Thats basically a death sentence, he has to die in prison. If youve ever been in jail, you know how depressing and soul crushing it feels to be locked up day after day after month and year. I would never seek to do that to a nonviolent or drug offender unless it was an extremely serious case. Like a chronic meth dealer who will not stop selling that poison.

But that guy knew the law and he still wouldnt stop! At the end of the day, we are all accountable for ourselves. Hes not a victim, even though he is in an awful, bullshit situation.

Im trying to understand your guys position, but seriously do you know what life in prison is? It sucks wayyyyyy worse than not being in prison. Like, youre condemning a guy to a life of torture (maybe not extreme torture but much worse than life outside PLUS long and drawn out) for stealing a few clothing items from some rich corporation. And you say youre not religious zealots.

That is true i knew a girl who was bad for shoplifting. Usually it was alcohol or cheap jewelry. The one time she did cause she "needed" A nice shirt for a interview, thats when she got caught.

Fortunately for her it was her first time being caught and the judge took pity on her since she did infact have a job interview.
