I want to give him a try, as a fan of weird horror and mysteries.

Eh, I'd watch Blue Velvet or Mulholland Drive first

How are they as mysteries? I hear both they have great twists and they aren't about narrative at all.

Blue Velvet is the most straightforward mystery of the 3. Lost Highway has a very similar narrative structure to Mulholland Dr. but it might be even less accessible.

Honestly I think watching them in order of release would be a good approach; Id definitely save Inland Empire for last either way. But yeah, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet & Mulholland Drive are all good starting points.

I heard the statement that the older the Lynch movie, the less narrative structure (not in a bad way, just that the more recent ones were more likely to be "solvable")

With the exception of Eraserhead, this is basically the opposite - especially with Inland Empire.

That's not really true. It's more like it jumps around. A few of his films are based on real life events and literary works, so those tend to have more traditional narratives. His last actual feature film, Inland Empire, is one of his most baffling. (But it's incredible.)

Well tbh, the phrase was passed on to me - I've only seen Mullholand Drive and Lost Highway, so it kind of fit with my (limited) two data points :P
