Why is it just now happening? Or has it been happening but not talked about? The news keeps saying, "one more added to the list," but yeah, that's 1 more. If it were an issue, people would have been dying all over the place by now. Why is it just happening now?

I gather most of the really extreme cases are using weird untested THC vape pens that aren't properly tested nor designed but I could be wrong

What I am reading is it's a type of pneumonia that can be caused by ingesting oils.

This is, uh. Yeah crude oil is not being used in vapes. Oils are a broad class of substances many of which you ingest every day and some are essential to health. I think until we know more about the specifics of this (keeping in mind how few people it is out of the millions vaping) we can't just conclude oils bad.

so here is what is really happening:

a lot of people now are buying thc oil vape carts in states where marijuana is illegal, because the thc carts are cheaper, more effective, and stealthier than the actual plant. pretty much a win-win for dealers & users.

the thc carts are sold in what appears to be retail packaging, so the customer (and prob dealer) think it's coming from a legit grow op. In reality, what's happening is that people are filling up these vape carts with their own concoctions of oils in their basement or whatever and then purchasing this "retail packaging" on amazon or ebay or whatever. a very common "brand" that has been cited in these cases is the brand Dank Vapes. In actuality this is not a real brand at all, people just buy the packaging online.

every single one of the instances of people getting pneumonia or whatever has been from exactly what I described above. Per the CDC:

All of the products used were electronic vaping pens/e-cigarettes that had refillable chambers or interchangeable cartridges with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) vaping concentrates or oils, which were all purchased on the street.

this isnt getting reported on by the news because they dont really understand the black market around drugs, or because they want to write a low effort moral panic on e-cigs. I'm also seeing some conspiracy theories about this being from big tobacco lobbyists which is very silly to me because half of these brands, like Juul for example, are owned by big tobacco.

drives me crazy, this whole thing is a result of the failed war on drugs & marijuana prohibition, but it's only going to get worse because nobody in the govt gives a shit

It'll probably turn out to be a cheap vape solvent that's been bought in bulk on Alibaba or something, which has the infamous vitamin E acetate in it either out of ignorance or bad quality control, and was then used by a knockoff discount vape-juice maker and/or basement refillers.

It definitely does make sense. Vaping is new relatively speaking, somewhat unregulated, and lacking in long term studies or scientific research.

People thought cigs were good for years. People didnt realize asbestos caused cancer. Or that lead paint was bad. Or mercury. Etc.

It's quite a bit different, though. People have been vaping for years yet we're only just now seeing this type of issue, and it seems specifically linked to vitamin E oil which is not a standard ingredient in vape juice.

We do need to regulate it a lot better though :\
