Saturday Night Live has announced 3 new cast members for its upcoming 45th season including the first and ONLY Asian American performer, Bowen Yang!!

He joined as a staff writer last season and will now be a featured player who is a co-host of a podcast, Las Culturistas and will likely play Kim Jong Un when the show premieres...

Also joining is Jewish Comedian, Chloe Fineman and Shane Gillis as Chloe has been a regular performer with the Groundlings improve company and were featured as "New Faces" at the Just Laughs Festival in Montreal

SNL has taken heat over the years for lack of ethnic diversity with scant Asian representation among its cast.

Former cast members, Fred Armisen and Rob Schneider who are both 25% Asian but neither have been widely recognized for their Asian ancestry

Among hosts, SNL included some asians such as Awkwafina, Aziz Ansari and Jackie Chan

Part of me gets his point about comedians being able to say things that might sound racist as part of an act. I think it's important to laugh at things like this, and be able to accept some comments that might sound a little racist/whatever out of context. I don't think comedians should be stifled or limited in terms of what they want to make fun of.

But I watched the video of him saying what he did, and it simply isn't funny. It isn't comedy in the slightest; it was a podcast with some other douche. I mean I could see if he was telling something on stage, you know like say Dave Chappelle might would do, but this was literally two dudes sitting there talking to each other on a podcast while being racist. If this was intended to be a comedy podcast, then yeah, it just missed badly. There was no comedic timing, no real punchline or payoff, just nothing but random acts of badness.

Not trying to do a "shtick". It was bad what he said but I watched a clip of his stand-up and it's funnier than anything I'd seen on SNL all last season imo.

Also it's pretty rich for SNL to kick him out since they used to thrive on very non-PC ethnic humor. The self-righteous comedy community sucks.

There's a way to do that sort of humor though, and I still think that's fine. It's an important thing to laugh at and I do agree our culture has become a bit too sensitive about it.

The video was just not funny though, and I am not even certain it was supposed to be a comedic podcast. It didn't feel like joking was the problem.

it wasnt just that one podcast clip that sunk him. Andrew Yang got involved because the guy called him a Jew c**** at some point, and he had to call to personally apologize to Chris Gethard for calling him and (I think) a bunch of other comedians f*****s. Thats just the stuff I happened to see, theres probably a ton more if you dig back through all the podcast episodes he did.

The guy is real into slurs in a way that very much does not jive with SNL or network television in general. Its crazy that they hired him in the first place, its like they didnt look into him at all.

I mean, put aside whether or not hes funny or if the jokes are ok to say or not: SNL made Pete Davidson apologize to Dan Crenshaw live on tv for some dumb eyepatch joke, how did they think Shane was a remotely good fit for their accepted level of edginess?
If this stuff hadnt come out he probably would have just joined the list of random white guys who are on the show for one season, are barely in any sketchs, and disappear into obscurity. Theres a good chance getting unhired is going to work out better for him in the long run.

the wrong sorts of people were already his fan base, I think. I caught a look at the subreddit for his podcast the day this stuff came out (they went private soon after) and it was real bad. A ton of super homophobic stuff.

and hey, he got supprt from Norm McDonald now too which he didnt have before. Thats a good guy to know. Also he got support from Rob Schneider which is maybe less exciting.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if he doesn't double down and get worse because these people are supporting him. That's what other comedians like Louis CK have done.
