So a few weeks ago we had either a stupid kid or a druggie break into the old unused detached garage and steal like $20 worth of garbage. I noticed since then he's left the tv in the main room on, at a slightly higher than average volume even, constantly, regardless of if anyone is watching it. I went and turned it off a few times like when I got home from work first, thinking he just forgot to do it himself but just a minute ago when I did so he came in and turned it right back on telling me it was supposed to be a "deterrent" so anyone casing the house would assume someone was home... I thought the guy was decently smart but I'm not sure after that, not to mention how annoying listing to a tv playing to an empty room is. God I really need to get my own place, living with other people will never not be a chore.

He's trying to trick burglars into thinking someone is home... when you're both home?

Is that right?

You use that sort of stuff when nobody is home. When you're home you being home is the deterrent. Your roommate is a dipshit.

Check out this device that simulates the lighting produced by a TV: http://faketv.com/

It consumes just a fraction of the power of a real TV and it has a light sensor and timer.
