No, permadeath/item loss in MMORPGs is an absolutely and profoundly stupid mechanic that thankfully is all but gone from modern MMORPGs.

Practically no consequences for death in modern MMORPGs is boring

EverQuest was certainly way too harsh, dropping everything and eventually decaying if you didn't get back to your death point in time...

But something like The Realm, where you only drop a thing or two, probably something even trivial like a piece of cheese and you can kill whatever (if anything) picks it up to get it back, just adds some excitement to risky battles and makes rare items feel even more precious.

Especially when you could be killed by other players when in a city. Just teasing, I don't think you could ever die in a city in a separate zone. Maybe way way in the past.

Fun fact: Runescape got rid of losing items on death because in all of its years of existence, the developer has never paid for servers good enough to where third party DDOS attacks aren't a problem. People used to scout endgame areas looking for people doing PvE in very expensive gear and pay third parties real money to knock the server down. The player would die while doing something like bossing and then the looter would take all his shit off the ground

Runescape 2 had a pretty good system. You drop 3 of your most expensive items, then you have a few minutes to dash back to the point of death and get your shit. After a short while, your dropped items show up to any and all players as well - so you have to get there before your items get looted AND before they despawn forever.

I agree, but they got rid of it in Old School RuneScape once entire clans dedicated to DDoSing showed up.
