The spiritual experience seems to be rooted in fear of death. Unless we live forever we will always have religious people.

Religion and the question of deity are different things once you leave the kiddie pool.

Because you addressed a completely different issue. Religious practice is on the downswing, belief in deity isn't.

Sorry if I snapped, but the automatic association grinds my gears-- it's like when people confuse climate and weather.

Belief in the supernatural will remain, but I imagine all modern codified religious beliefs will only get harder and harder to maintain.

Maybe not. It's been thousands of years and we have amazing tech already yet billions of people still have such beliefs.

Remember in Alien: Covenant when the captain was a man of faith?

It will be like that, space colonists breaking new ground and dominating the frontier of space and a few stubborn few clinging desperately to an antiquated belief structure.

Maybe. But I think we're more likely to get fringe offshoots of modern religions that grow into the new main religions.

Billions of people still live in parts of the world where you can get dragged out of your house and burned in the street for being a witch if you're the neighborhood oddball.

Also, better tech and understanding of science doesn't resolve the issue for a lot of people. The percentage of people, even in the first world, that understand anything more complex than the combustion engine is relatively small. Cognitive dissonance will keep a lot of people believing in the supernatural.

To be fair, it made sense when we were primitive and didn't understand the world or how it worked. There is really no justification for it in the modern scientific world.

Most people still don't understand, and no amount of education is going to help them. Telling them "trust me" is how you wind up with 9/11 truthers, flat earthers and anti-vaxxers.

Atheism is on a rise in first world countries, its just very miniscule. What you are seeing on a huge rise is the amount of Millenials and Gen Z'ers becoming irreligious. They will believe in some form of supernatural, just not what anything of the Judeo Christian religions are teaching. No one wants to sit down and read a silly book or listen to a guy preaching to the choir for +1 hour, theres just better stuff to waste your time on.

We might not have anything as lame as organized religion, but there's sure to be lots of Mars oriented folktales and folk religions after we've been there awhile. You can take human beings off of Earth, but you can't take humanity away from human beings. I mean, we've never even been there and we have countless fantasy stories about the place, if anything actually living there would intensify that.

I think there will always be religion. the specific religions might change though. it's possible that none of the current religions will still be around in like a thousand years. but I bet they get replaced by something else

If God creates everything, then He created the moon, too. Doesnt disprove Him by any means, lol.

But people don't just believe what they believe. Religions have been pushed as right and purported as fact in societies since the beginning of humankind.

The problem though is with atheism, by it's own nature, it makes everything worthless. Nothing we do matters if there is no bigger picture
