Stanford University offered to put up a PLAQUE at the spot where Chanel Miller was raped by Brock Turner but they REJECTED her quotes she wanted because they wanted a more reassuring message of FORGIVENESS!!

She recounts her interactions with the rapist who spent less than 3 months in jail for it as she wanted them to use a quote from her memoir "Know My Name"

The 27 y/o paints the university's response as weak and detached and condemns administrators apparent efforts to manipulate the narrative and wanted something less damaging to their reputation.

A defining moment came when they approached her about putting up a plaque where she was raped after Turner violatd her unconscious body behind a dumpster after a frat party before he was stopped by 2 Swedish students

They removed the dumpster in 2017 and re-landscaped it into a small garden with benches and a fountain

She suggested quotes from her powerful 7000 word victim impact statement and became a figure for the #MeToo movement and inspired many other sexual assault survivors

But they rejected ALL of her quotes and pushed for a message of forgiveness instead..she then disassociated herself from the discussion

This prompted around 60 students to protest the Stanford Association for Students for Sexual Assault Prevention outside of the Kappa Alpha frat

The first one she suggested was "You made me a victim. In newspapers my name was 'unconscious intoxicated woman' ten syllables, and nothing more than that. For awhile, i beleived that that was all i was. I had to force myself to relearn my name, my identity. That i am not just a drunk victim at a frat party behind a dumpster, while you are an all-american swimmer at at op university, innocent until proven guilty, with so much at stake. I am a human being who has been irreversibly hurt, my life was put on hold for over a year, waiting to figure out if i was worth something".

The second was "You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice, until today"

The University rejected both and wanted a message of hope and forgiveness instead as Miller slammed the decision and encourages people to put their own wordson the plaque and not to remember it's where she was asaulted but where she was saved by 2 heroes named Carl-Fredrik Arndt and Peter Jonsson.

The school only offered her money on the conditon she would NOT SUE them and described their lack of apathy as something she could overlook but not how they would ensure it doesn't happen again

She was outraged over the lenient sentence as Brock is now living a good life working at a factory job at $12 an hour despite raping Chanel behind a dumpster and Brock's father calling it "20 minutes of action" as the judge did not want to ruin Brock's life over.

Chanel decided to go public with her name so people don't let another Brock Turner get a slap on the wrist

Do you think the plaque message should be Chanel's message or a message of "forgiveness"?

Regardless of the message, does anyone else think it's kind of weird to put a plaque where a woman was raped?

I can see why they wouldn't want to put her quotes on there, maybe if she talked about how she overcame being a victim or something

It's an American university, you have to expect some head-scratching decisions. Honestly, even converting the space into a recreation area seems weird. The dumpsters, etc, definitely should have gone, but at most they should have just stuck with a garden rather than turning it into a potential hangout.

Remember: It's Ducky and the Daily Mail. Apparently they badly mischaracterized what Miller claimed that Stanford had asked for:

And when Miller offered Stanford pieces of her statement to put on a plaque near where the attack happened, it turned her down in hopes she would give it "something reassuring and inane, something that implied all was forgiven," NPR writes. Miller and Stanford negotiated for a while, but Miller eventually turned the school down.

According to Miller, it sounds like Stanford wanted a less negative-sounding message. It had nothing to do with forgiving her attacker, if that's what you're reading into it.
