I don't get this story. Was she convicted of murder because she didn't actually think it was her apartment, or because she didn't follow SOP when she thought there was an intruder? And if she knew it wasn't her apartment, what was she even doing there?

She legitimately thought that it was her apartment.

She was convicted because she acted extremely brash and reckless and it ended up with the death of a man. There were many other options she could have chosen beyond waltzing in and eliminating the "threat".

She was off duty and drunk. SOP literally wasn't even a factor under consideration for the case.

She claimed SYG defense and that the guy charged her and the Jury didn't buy it. They then asked "okay but like what if it did happen? That's castle doctrine right? That's basically still legal anyway which means you're still a murderer."

Yup. The prosecution brought up a point yesterday I hadn't even considered: Even if it WAS her apartment, it could have been a maintenance person in the apartment.

But according to testimony during the case, there have been a number of situations at that apartment complex where people end up on the wrong floor and sometimes even walk into other people's apartments.

I'm definitely keeping my doors locked when I'm at home from here on out.

IIRC, she did notice her key didn't work, but the door was ajar so she opened it and went inside any way.

That makes sense, but it's weird that the prosecution was trying to spin it like "there's no way she didn't know this apartment wasn't hers" if that wasn't actually the argument. I can see how how the defense backfired on her though. Either way, she did the crime so now she'll do the time.

Also, a reminder to lock your doors, people. Trust me, someone's gonna walk in sooner or later if you don't.

Bothams door lock had a defect which was noted multiple times during the trial. When she put her key in, the door moved forward slightly which is what alerted her that the door was already open. She then heard movement inside.

Good news, people of color are starting to get Justice.
Lets also not forget the Somali-American cop who killed a Australian American woman who called 911 for help, he was charged and given 12 years.. And no blue lives matters people supported him, if they would have let this woman get off with her even more brazen murder things would look very hypocritical.

Now we need to hold white male cops who kill innocents accountable too.

They weren't trying to spin it as "there's no way she didn't know this wasn't her apartment". They were pointing out that she missed several key clues that would have helped alert her to the fact that it wasn't her apartment.

Reading that article upset me a little. She kept saying she shot the guy because she was scared. Yeah, how is that a valid defense for your stupid actions? You had several attempts to rectify the situation or figure out what you were doing wrong, and you took none of them and ended up murdering someone as a result. Youre scared??? Yeah, what about the victim you shot in his own home? How do you think he felt?

And of course, if he had shot her then castle doctrine wouldn't have saved him from being prosecuted because she's a white cop.

The prosecution asked her if being alone at home and having someone barge into your apartment and shoot you is scarier.

He got her to admit that what happened to Jean was scarier. He framed it something like Can you imagine that an intruder bursting into your home and shooting you might just be a bit scarier? And she replied yes

He also used that moment to point out that even to this day, she was putting her feelings and needs above his.
