This should've been in from the beginning dude! This changes everything. You were in the right.

Thats called a hostile work environment and is grounds for another complaint.
This is why HR came down on it hard.
They need to have a paper trail and a history of disciplinary actions so that if something comes of it, the company doesnt get sued. She just gets fired.
A lot of people are blaming the TC, but TC did the right thing for the company.
If you dont like how it all played out, dont be stupid and it wont be an issue.

One thing to keep in mind is that you have to be squeaky clean to take this approach. Depending on the company structure, the management may be able to identify the complainer (even if it's anonymous). They can still "retaliate" if it's done by the book.

Ok now this changes shit.

What you should have done was once you noticed this was becoming more frequent then you should have started recording dates and times this sort of shit was happening and who else was present when it happened before going to HR.

What you need to do now is maybe start recording instances where you are now getting picked on cos like other people have said, retaliation isnt allowed regarding HR incidents

The lunchroom is a work environment. The point isnt whether they talk to you, the point is the change from talking to you to not talking to you. If the employee feels intimidated or threatened because of the change in treatment, it could become a management problem. He would probably be moved somewhere else.
Not only that, but legally, it could be the weekend and youre at a table with your fam and friends and a coworker is at another table with their fam and friends and youre talking racist stuff at your table, they can actually repot it to HR on Monday and it becomes a work related issue.
Im not making this stuff up! Like I said, we have an all day annual training on this stuff and this is truth! I totally disagree with it but its true.

Unfortunately what sounds like an incredibly mild comment on the spectrum of all possible racist things to say was indeed reported, and now HR has to act on this swiftly and harshly to set a precedent.

Congratulations for outing a racist comment, thats a good thing. However, you have reported for what most people would let slide and have actively ostracized yourself. While your actions should be congratulated, I question whether or not you made the work environment safer, or if it was unsafe to begin with. This is where analyzing and anticipating consequences before actions are made comes into play. Absolutely the reverse can and should be said about the person who actually made the offensive remark as well. Snitching like that is definitely grounds for shaming and being isolated, whether you feel it is warranted or not. You can document all you want, but if HR keeps getting complaints from you the microscope will indeed be turned. And as much as people really want to believe that retaliatory reporting doesnt exist, it does.
