Sky definitely has the best overall story in this franchise. Gates to Infinity has some of my favorite character writing though. Gurdurr not being able to work due to a crippling back injury and giving up on an honest life because someone tore down a house he built purely out of spite is just too fucking real for this series, man.

Playing it again for the first time in a while and I kinda forgot how instantly likable some of the characters are. Dunsparce knows he's weak, but he's always trying to be stronger; Emolga's a bit of a hothead, but he genuinely cares about his friends, and he even has a bit of a mischievous side later with the frism prank; Virizion is this aloof loner who doesn't believe in friendship, but she's still a good enough person when it counts that it makes you want to know what her deal is; and Scraggy is surprisingly hilarious as this "reformed" bad guy who really doesn't want to be there and is only kept in line because he doesn't want to get his ass kicked by Quagsire again. And that's just scratching the surface, there basically isn't a single character in this game that I actively dislike, and it breaks my heart that it's still mostly considered "the bad game" because of gameplay quirks when that's never been PMD's strong suit to begin with.

I wouldn't say gameplay isn't PMD's strong suit, necessarily. As a sort of roguelike its gameplay mechanics seem to have niche appeal by nature, but if that sort of thing is up your alley, I feel it has a decent appeal. I think that's where Super's main appeal lies, since I found it a fair bit harder - which, with the extra content (especially in comparison to Gates), really made it very fun for me to play.

But then Super is also almost an overcorrection from Gates, in that its plot just kinda ... fell flat. It wasn't bad, but I feel like it was the worst of the main four entries. Sure they doled out the content and made the game more challenging and all that, but not the same level of care seems to have been taken to the story and its writing.

It looks like for that development team, it's hard for them to get the two in balance. That's what Explorers did well, in my opinion - it balances the appeals to those who loved the story, and those who loved playing the game and exploring and all that.

It would be so fucking nice if they could get their stuff together for a new, fifth game (technically sixth but whatever) on the Switch. With lessons learned from Explorers, Gates, and Super, they could really knock it out of the park. But ... based on the lack of news in that vein, on top of how poorly Gates and Super sold and were received, and considering how long it's been since Super ... I'm not optimistic.

Never meant to imply it's bad or anything. Just feels really...basic? and definitely a bit repetitive at times. Especially in the DS games and Gates, where you kinda just brute force everything. Which is kinda why Super was my favorite game to actually play, because it taught you early on to rely on items more often than brute strength, which made it that much more cathartic whenever you did get to play around with OP characters. Really hammered home the point that you're just a couple of dumb kids who are in a little over their heads and have to rely on their wits and stronger companions to squeak by. ...At least until those anime af transformation sequences where you're suddenly evolved and overpowered, but I prefer to forget those segments. >_>

Really though, I'd just be happy if the next game (if it ever gets made) focuses on an ensemble cast like Gates did.

It's on the Wii U VC for what it's worth. Not sure how much it costs.

That said I'd gladly pay well more than $40 for it.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. I don't mind basic and repetitive so much, though, so long as it's fun. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Dragon Quest clones bore me to death because those have battles that are basically "spam A to win". Blah.

I'm not sure how Switch could handle DS games. They could easily get Red Rescue Team at least, not sure about anything else.

Of course ChunSoft could just do a remaster/remake or something, everyone would love that.

The Hero wanting to go back to the PMD world kinda takes me out of the self-insert mindset considering most of the townspeople tried to kill him and I'd be noping the fuck outta the PMD world at that point, but you do you Rescue Team Hero. >_>

Explorers of the sky is one of the newer ones isnt it? I had blue rescue team and then explorers of darkness, and they were both pretty fun.

Explorers of Sky is basically the "third version" for Darkness/Time. Came out a little later, has some extra content and Pokemon and features.

The most notable bit is the inclusion of "Special Episodes" which includes four backstories for various characters in the plot, and a fifth one focusing on what happens to Grovyle, Dusknoir, and company in the future, after your battle in the Hidden Land.

My biggest gripe with the game as a whole is there is an unholy amount of unnecessary waiting for cutscenes to end and/or running all over town. It all just takes so long >_>

Best Pokemon game and series, imo. Sky and Rescue Team are the only games to ever make me cry. >_>

Also, I wish there was a full PMD anime series based on the games like the Phoenix Wright anime.

There were 3 anime specials - one for Rescue Team, two for Explorers - for what it's worth. Just individual episodes, not their own series, sadly.

I remember those specials. Feels like a missed opportunity, imo. Too bad Gates to Infinity only got two short clips.
