When I first played I did the prologue tutorial, fought some enemies, and got dropped in the first inn. The battle controls, systems, and world were a bit daunting so I stopped playing for a while.

Well I picked it up again and just dove in. Doing side quests and just heading to map markers while looking for provisions along the way and it aint too bad now. I completed the first area and moved to the castle.

- Im really scrounging for gold. Which is kind of nice and makes finding treasure valuable while also still making me carefully consider my purchases.

- So Im super relieved that non-food inventory items seem to not be strictly consumables... but have a charge so I only have to craft them once? Still a little confused on that.

- Takes a long time to level up. So may skills and only two slots still. :(

- I think I might finally try Gwent out...

Once you craft a potion/oil you dont need to do it again. Every time you stop to meditate the charges get refilled as long as you have an ingredient called alcohest in stock. If youre always searching containers and bodies for loot then you dont need to worry running out because its such a common item.

Also along your travels be sure to play Gwent with every new shopkeeper/innkeeper you come across. For every first time win youre awarded a new card. And purchase any cards you see for sell.

Theres a few side missions towards the later game where youll need to play against expert Gwent players and youll want to be prepared with a good deck of cards.

can you just jump straight to Witcher 3 with no knowledge of the series? I know that even before the first game is like a trilogy or more of books as well...

My first time through I got a little overwhelmed by the number of quests in my journal but it helps if you just focus on one thing at a time.

I also really like the way the potion inventory works, it encourages you to use them more often because they refill when you rest instead of having to hoard them

Cool cool. Thanks for all that.

Some random questions

- Can you cook raw meats?
- Does parry only work on humans? I seem to have a bad time when I try it with Drowners and other beasts. Though it seemed to work on Wraiths so is it only useful against wielded weapons?

Also this game world is really windy lol

You can! Some of the books in the game world describe some background tidbits that's good to know, but they're not long or anything.

Youll sometimes come across dialogue that is referencing events from the previous games or books but theyre mostly simple mentions.

Theyre just to let you know that Geralt has previously known the person and whether they left on good or bad terms.

You cant cook in the game, you can just purchase or loot food items.

Also you cant forge weapons of armors on your own, you need to go to a smith and you do the creating through their menu options.

You can parry attacks from the smaller monsters but not all their attacks. Sometimes theyll do a power move and your best option will be to dodge.

As for the bigger monsters I dont recall ever being able to parry, just a lot of dodging.

Also the Quen ability can shield you from an attack (or more if leveled up) in case you forget to dodge.

Oh right. Witchers are resistant to poisons and pathogens so it makes sense cooking isnt important from a narrative or gameplay standpoint.

I use to think General Kota and Geralt were the same person back when I never knew what Witcher was.

Turns out they don't look that similar.

Damn this second map is pretty big.

Literally lost my first attempt at Gwent because of the opponents leader perk of winning draws. But I at least have a decent understanding now.

It is fantastic
Unfortunately I only got into it during the mid late game. By that tune I had missed out on a mindset of excellent cards.

i was confused since i thought you only got "into the swing" by the time you reached the kaer morhen, then realized that wasn't the castle you were talking about.

so basically you just got out of the intro area...

How many hours you got in so far?

I'm 38 hours in I'm just not feeling the game, the story is great but the gameplay and the way they mixed high level monsters and quests into your quest list and map its annoying avoiding certain areas and quests so you gotta shift through what you can do at your current level. That aspect of the game is a complete mess.

Otherwise I'm enjoying it to.
