I've been employed at my current employer for ~2 years now.

My last employer laid me off because I wasn't a "team player"
My current employer has stated multiple times how much of a "team player" I am and how I am one of the most important members in our team.

I've had horrible depression & anxiety ever since I got laid off 2-3 years ago.
None of it's justified because I couldn't cope with the fact that my last employer was a fucking asshole and made me out to be some invalid

Why do people want to actively destroy someone's career?

Because once At-Will employment kicks you in the ass it haunts you forever.

I agree with this. My work performance is greatly dependent if I like that job or not.

Being let go or laid off is very traumatic.

Years ago I worked for a company that absolutely loved me. Despite this they laid me off twice in 3 years. Each time I was laid off it only lasted a month. In hindsight thats not bad, and was a nice little vacation. Except for the fact that when I was laid off I didnt know at the time it would only be for a month. The company didnt know either. They said Id be back as soon as they got a new client for me, which could have taken many months.

Here I am 5 years later and still cant get over the fear I felt during that time. And again, they liked me. So I cant imagine what it must be like for you, TC, that they felt like being dicks about the whole situation.

Same. I drove trucks in the Army and wanted to do that when I got out. Got a job at a lumberyard that told me they'd let me use one of their trucks to take the road test. Two years after getting hired I was still on a forklift building lumber orders for other drivers to deliver... I was miserable, and it showed in my performance. Got fired, and my very next job fulfilled the promise to allow me to use their truck for the test. Been happy as a clam since. Love driving truck.

There are plenty of jobs that are seasonal, or dependent on work contracts, where layoffs are part and parcel of the job. Unless they lied to you when you were hired and said they don't lay people off I don't see how that could be traumatic. What you're describing is different from what Judg is describing.
