What kid grows up and is so morally depraved and lacks any form of creativity or love for life that they think "I'm gonna join ICE", and not a scientist, musician, astronaut, writer, marine biologist etc.

honestly, they probably just pull from other agencies and cops who get fired from the police force.

i would never work for such a shit agency; it would be like working for the IRS

For an agency that is supposedly keeping people out or sending them back, they sure do love holding on to people for an extended period of time.

Much like the war on drugs was a disproportionate and overly carceral response to drug use, ICE is a disproportionate and overly carceral response to immigration.

How do we have any regular road that just connects two countries without any kind of boarder crossing station? Or at the very least giant ass signs nobody could miss even if they were legally blind?

Complete bullshit. If they're British they don't need a visa to enter the US anyway. Someone seriously fucked up.

The plot thickens:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50067575

A British family detained in the US after crossing the border from Canada intentionally entered the country illegally, officials have said.

They said the vehicle was captured on video "slowly and deliberately" driving through a ditch to enter the US.

Two adults in the vehicle had previously been denied travel authorisation to the US, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said.

Because we haven't always been a country that treated national borders like a police state would.

The issue is the UK couple is claiming they entered the US when they swerved to avoid an animal and ended up down a service road. If there's video footage of them instead cutting through a ditch to intentionally cross the border that changes everything from an intent perspective.

Its almost like not everyone can get their dream job that requires talent, education and probably social skills and some luck and/or connections.

We have to apply to do so though.

Edit: Actually, just noticed that bit about "by air or sea". Does that mean you can't use it to arrive by land crossing or that you can without applying for ESTA or a visa at all?

I've been watching a lot of Border Security on Netflix and apparently this is a thing. Usually they send them back to Canada after checking them out but since they weren't Canadian and the UK wouldn't return their call they had to be held. Maybe be a little more careful about crossing international borders next time.

The article also says they had $16k in cash, but doesn't specify what currency

and that's also if you believe an anonymous source at CBP

Or we can stop being so gung-ho about borders. At the most, just escort them back to the border and see them off. What is the big deal about people merely existing inside of arbitrary country lines? Like I've never understood why that in and of itself is such a concerning issue and risks you getting arrested and killed. Everybody doesn't need to be treated like barbarians at the gates.

No, just stop being so obsessed with them.

Every border crossing isn't immigration. Illegal immigration isn't an invasion. Crossing the border doesn't need to be a crime itself.

fucking joke US gov't

"In a statement, CBP said U.S. agents also determined that two of the family members had applied for travel authorization to visit the United States and were denied. A senior CBP official said the Connorses applied for visa waivers last year, and it was not immediately clear why they were rejected. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the case, said the family four adults and three small children were in possession of $16,000 in cash at the time of their arrest."

My dude, we live in a post 9/11 world and what you are proposing is a pipedream. They were crossing the border with large amounts of cash and their story didn't match up. They have every right to deny them entry, just like Canada did. They don't get special treatment because they were British or had a kid. Sorry.

after reading the article it seems like it's not as black and white as the headline makes it out to be. the family might not be totally innocent, and might be lying some. doesn't excuse some of the treatment they got. but I don't know that the family is 100% innocent
