Some excerpts

Around 5:50 p.m., a St. Louis County police officer was traveling on Halls Ferry when he saw a black car traveling at a high rate of speed. Before the officer could stop the car, a 12-year-old girl ran into the street and was hit by the car, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
...

A family member of the girl said doctors don't know if she will survive. She is suffering from internal bleeding and needs life-saving surgery.
...

A spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said they wanted to clarify that the officer involved did not have his emergency lights and siren activated when the child was hit.

Also heard on local news that the dash cam was supposedly off.

Why!? Why would the camera ever be off or why would they not have the lights and sirens on during a pursuit.

You know why

Are you implying that officers purposefully turn the cameras off? How dare you

Sounds like it wasn't a chase at all, he saw a speeder and hit a little girl as he was getting ready to pull him over. Didn't even have his lights on yet

Reading again that's what I'm getting too. The news cast i saw seemed to indicate it was a pursuit, which i guess you could say it was technically

If the cop was speeding in order to catch up to someone else who was speeding, he should have had his lights on.

What's crazy is the other driver might not have had any idea this was going on

Either that or he saw it and kept driving

I thought about that too. Like if he didn't know and thought it could be him based on the time it occurred and what he drives

Depending on how the camera is rigged up, most of them dont record all of the time. Theyll record a minute or a few minutes just prior to the lights being activated, and then until the lights are deactivated.

I didnt read the article, and Im not defending or passing judgment; Im just shedding a little light on how modern dash cameras generally work.

Body cameras normally operate on a similar principle.

From the article:
"Granda says the cruiser's dash cam wasn't recording, but data show that officer hit speeds of 59 miles an hour in a 30 mile-per-hour zone. The chase lasted 32 seconds over a quarter mile, across the county-city line."

Yeah, lights and sirens should have DEFINITELY been going by the time you've been chasing for a full 30+ seconds at double the posted speed limit.

You're trying to stop a car for driving dangerously. In order to do that, yes, you need to drive dangerously too. But that's why you have sirens. So you can let people know that some dangerous shit is going down and they should be on alert. You know...to prevent shit like literally this exact scenario from happening.

Seems like pure incompetence to me, tbh. I don't think he was trying to do or get away with anything shady. I just think he was an idiot who probably shouldn't have been in a position of such responsibility in the first place.

The article was updated since creating the topic. Given that new information, this is terrible negligence on the cops part. If the girl dies, involuntary manslaughter charges would be fair. Hopefully she makes it, but there should be charges either way
