no, but that kind of money is still significant. and i don't think there was/is any resentment. scorsese, coppola, spielberg, and lucas were all friendly back in the day. especially coppola/lucas and lucas/spielberg. lucas almost made apocalypse now before star wars got funded. spielberg obv made the most 'blockbuster'-y as he virtually created the event with jaws and got the most monetary success. and i'm sure scorsese and coppola enjoy his movies.

Yeah, I mis-stated that, it's not the money, I do think it's the relevance that they're struggling with. Young audiences don't care about them anymore. I'm of an age where I can understand them feeling a bit left behind.

I'm not going to argue the virtue of the Marvel films-- they've done a good job putting the page on the screen for me, and that's it. I think they resonate further with millenial and younger audiences, though. They're redemption stories for a generation that's pessimistic and often cynical before their years. The overarching narrative is also one of a surrogate family, which I think resonates with all young people.
It might be harder for older directors to see the comfy appeal. I see it but don't completely get it.

What's the point of this?

Is it just famous directors complaining because no matter what their movies are gonna gross $1 billion?
Do they think people will just "wake up" and not see superhero films anymore?
Is it just a publicity stunt?

I don't get it. What's to be gained?

He's right. When he describes what he feels cinema is what he means is that it has artistic value or merit. The MCU has no artistic value in the same sense as something like Apocalypse Now or the Godfather. The issue is that there isn't anything wrong with that. Not every movie needs to be fine cinema. There is nothing wrong with something's only value being entertainment.

I mean he kinda gave his opinion but gave it in an authoritarian sort of way like his opinion actually mattered more than other people's. He didn't need to say the MCU was despicable, just that he didn't like it. But yeah you're right it's really nothing to get riled up over.

At least to me, it's the spectacle. Seeing the battle for NY in the last act of Avengers with the whole team together or the combined might at the end of Endgame is really cool.
It's just that when I rewatch it, it's bad. Like, really bad. The hits have like no weight to them, it's over before you know what's going on, and they always fuck up the camera angles.

I'm not really much of a Marvel fan.

I'm just calling it like it is.

This is elitist drivel

"No this popular art that is widely beloved and massively successful doesn't "Count" because me and people like me who are obviously superior to you think it is beneath us, only our "proper" things count."

Is nonsense. It's just the mental version of jacking off.

Flat out right now more people will be inspired to act , direct, write music, make costumes, write stories, ask that girl out etc by watching Avengers popcorn flicks than will be inspired by The Rainmaker.

And let's face it, a lot of elitist Rainmaker fans will say the movie "doesn't count" because it's for dumb dumb inferior people who don't read the "true" book.

It's just a terrible attitude from people who have very narrow close minded views and huge egos.

Twixt less so but Tetro and Youth Without Youth are incredible films that make me wish he'd return to filmmaking.

I've said it before but the worst thing about super hero movies is the missed potential. Some of the source material is absolutely amazing and definitely important works of art. When did a superhero movie ever look as visually stunning and inventive as a Jack Kirby double page from the 60s/70s. Then there's plenty of great comic books in terms of writing. Sadly with marvel and others it's all just dumbed down with a bland visual palette, incoherent action scenes and none of the wonder and creativity of comic books. Comic book fans should demand better, it's baffling the way they eat up this shit.

Absolutely. Like a movie I watched and made a topic about earlier, Super Inframan, it's a 70s Hong Kong superhero movie and it is so visually exciting, the effects are inventive and the action scenes involve trained martial artists. I'd take that over any Marvel superhero movie.
