I guess now is a better time than ever to type out a mini-rant that popped into my head:

I voted for A Nightmare on Elm Street, but it left a sour taste in my mouth. That can't really be the best horror franchise ever can it? But I think horror is a unique genre in that in order for a franchise as a whole to be good, the original entrant really can't be a nice, complete work of art. If it is a complete film, then any sequels will inevitably take away the inherent merits of the franchise as a whole (see: The Exorcist). Therefore, for a franchise to work, you almost need a great concept without a truly "great" initial entrant. It's very weird!

^ This is likely a part of the reason why franchise horror in general is so overwhelmingly "meh." Almost every franchise in this poll has a strong opening entry that they then spend decades never living up to. Standalone movies are really where it's at with the genre unless you're just in it for the schlock.

I'll keep voting for Friday the 13th cause Jason is the best reocurring villain and its best movie is not set in stone. Its OST is also classic.

I get Nightmare is more creative in both story and kills but then they have to create a series of ritualistic differents ways for Freddy to die, which may make sense at the time, but then it happens they didn't work at all lol, It's like every story is Mega Man X5. Some of the deaths got just too goofy too.

Halloween unfortunately has a couple of dropped storylines that could've worked.

Final Destination is literally about a bunch of people who die for no reason and there's no way out of it, repeat ad infinitum .

Evil Dead got too comedic too soon.

Saw started strong but they got too focused on the traps themselves.

Child's Play I'm actually just getting into but so far the most abused character is Chucky himself lol.

Paranormal Activity is probably the best representative here of all sequels been derivative.

Alien is barely a horror series. Might as well put in Terminator and Predator.

Backlog: Personal Nightmare (Amiga), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (N64), Space Invaders (Franchise). Last finished: Project Firestart (C64).

The Purge series I think is a fantastic example of what you're talking about here. The first film is a rather bland, generic house invasion story with only small allusions to what's actually happening on the outside. It made you want to experience the full carnage and extent of The Purge rather than just being stuck in a humdrum house for the entire time. Cue Anarchy, and we got just that, and now we have films that appreciate and delve into both perspectives. Most of the Purge films since have also stayed at a pretty even quality.

Hannibal movies aren't horror!

Hellraiser is great though. Hard to nail 10 franchises so I respect Nick's decisions minus Alien.

I agree, it's why I prefered doing Scariest Movie instead.

Final Destination series is such a huge tease. Person has a premonition of death and saves a bunch of people from it only for most of them to die even worse deaths than they originally would have. Its so cruel when you think about it.
