Of course they should, they could've bought new equipment and saved their grandmother.

Yes. Because they didn't even bother to call 911 to try and get help. They just let the place and her burn without even trying to get her help.

While not trying to get grandma out was a very awful thing, I don't feel someone should be able to be charged with a crime for not going back into a burning building to save someone.

Unless it can be shown that they started the fire. But that's a different issue.

Absolutely. They should be imprisoned for a long time.

Had a guy locally who burned down the building he lived in making meth. Building was a historical one, as people from this county and nearby towns signed up for the Civil War there. To make things worse, someone died in the fire.

He accepted a plea of 15-25 years. Not long enough at all but that's the glory of plea bargains

There's a lot of room for subjectivity there in terms of how reasonable it would be to expect them to get her out. Expecting them to charge through the flames and dive out of a third-story window with her wouldn't be reasonable. Expecting them to take an extra minute of the 10-15 they had to escape to help her down the stairs would be.

But like you stated...they didn't even bother to call 911/Fire Dept/or somebody to help with the situation...

And they had no problem going back in a 'Burning Building' to get their illegal Meth Equipment...

Should they go to jail for it?

Well, they caused the accident by doing some seriously illegal shit and then left somebody to die from that accident so.... yeah? It doesn't really seem so much like a Good Samaritan issue as it is a matter of their illegal conduct resulting in a death.

Felony murder.

If anyone dies during commission of a felony (which meth production is), their death counts as a murder under the law. It doesn't actually matter if it was intentional, deliberate, or even if the people involved were aware of it at the time. If it can be proved that the fire was started by the meth production process itself (as opposed to being an unrelated coincidence), they're technically guilty of first-degree murder until existing law.

Granted, a prosecutor doesn't have to seek that as a charge, but they're fully entitled to.
