The non-sequitor.

If you climb an unstable ladder and the ladder falls... that's an accident; there's a natural narrative flow.

If you climb a ladder and headbutt a lightbulb, that's a freak accident.

A freak accident, to my understanding, is an accident where the outcome could not have been anticipated at all, and carelessness wasn't a factor.

So to use the above example, a freak accident would be more akin to climbing the ladder and having a bird crash into you, knocking you down.

Pretty much. The exact threshold for what sort of accident is reasonably predictable is subjective, of course, and it's important to be careful not to jump straight to calling something a freak accident until you've given it enough serious consideration to be certain that you couldn't have foreseen or prevent it, but that's the gist of it.

Any of the overly contrived deaths from a Final Destination movie would be a great example. You have the original accident and then everything after that is an implausible chain of events until, towards the end, shit is just randomly happening
