I mean if you wanna make a holistic top 100 games list that accounts for both how good the game was at the time and how good it is now, it's not unreasonable to put Donkey Kong on it, but the pretense that you're removing historical impact from your decision makes that look foolish

I can't say I've ever really liked Donkey Kong that much anyway, like, it was mostly just that thing that you had to suffer through in DK64, I can beat the game in like a few minutes now and there isn't much more to it than that

if you're gonna go with an ancient arcade classic why not Galaga? Galaga still fucking slaps

Yeah, even AT THE TIME OF RELEASE in 1981 I probably would only have Donkey Kong in the lower teens, based purely on how good it is at that time

Donkey Kong is definitely a pretty interesting game for its time, being one of the first platformers, and feeling like it actually has a start and end point, so it feels like there is a big thing to accomplish instead of just playing forever and ever (although you still end up doing that when you end up looping)

but it's hard for me to say it offers a lot to the modern gamer, and I say that as someone who's extremely invested in the gaming of that era. like Super Mario Bros, now there's a game that still belongs in a top 100, that game kicks ass

listing DK and not DK '94 is the strongest evidence of a list being pure straight trash

like the whole thing about '94 is taking classic DK and turning it into an actual good game

GB Tetris is still fun and I don't know what you would call the 'definitive' version of the game anyway, there's like, a lot of versions of the game so I can't be bothered to figure out which one is quote-unquote the best

I scrolled down in such a way that I could see #2 but not #1, and I stopped and played a game of "can I guess what #1 is?" With SMB1 and SMB3 listed recently, SMW went completely forgotten to me, so I started contemplating what it could have been. I guessed maybe it was MGS2. I gasped at the thought that it could be Pong. Then I realized...wait, where's Sonic? Surely they wouldn't have zero Sonic and then toss one of the Genesis originals at freaking #1, right?

Also yeah as a pretty big Tomb Raider fan, Rise being the highest/only/best one is super weird to me. It might not even be top 5 in the series. I even prefer 2013, and that's to say nothing of 2, 4, Anniversary and Legend.

DS version is good, but for my money, you can't be the n64 one where you get bonus points for constructing shapes out of certain piece combinations.

I wish lists like this would cluster some games and franchises together. There's no reason to point to the original Tetris and not just the general concept that has been reproduced a hundred times over.

I see plenty of lists like these that include games like the original Civilization seemingly as a representative of the franchise as a whole, but why not make that clear? Why would anyone recommend the original Civilization in this day and age over those that followed? I feel like these lists are made in a similar vein to lists about films and music and whatever, but those mediums rarely if ever have works that can be considered direct improvements of a work that came before; certain games have a near-obsolete point where it seems disingenuous to bring them up on their own.

If you ask me if a game was good back then it's good now. I would hardly agree those are the best 100 games ever.

But more practically, it would be about a random somewhat invested in modern gaming, picking it up, and having fun. So maybe that list isn't that bad at all in that regard.

NES Legend of Zelda is absolutely outstanding that's still great to play today, but practically, and sadly, most would give up on it after the first 1 or 2 screens.
