Almost this. Some was overblown, but most of the hate on it was either because it didn't hold a candle to the original, or because the cast and crew confused that statement of fact with sexism.

There was a lot of actual blatant sexism going on, not to mention racism(All those people attacking Leslie Jones on Twitter).

That's not to say there wasn't legitimate criticism. It's just that those people were drowned out by the trolls and people who really don't like women. That's because the sensible people weren't shouting.

People who called Leslie Jones a bad actress were called racist purely for stating a black actress wasn't a good actress.

James Rolfe was called a racist and sexist for saying he wouldn't watch the movie because the trailer made it looked bad.

Every bit of criticism made about the movie was shouted down as racist and sexist until it came out, just like The Last Jedi, and Batwoman, and Terminator Dark Fate. Notice a pattern?

Really the problem with the movie is that they didn't go all in. There were so many setups for great jokes about sexism and misogyny that didn't lead to the jokes. It reeked of some dumbass fat old white men hamstringing the movie to try and appease a bunch of other dumbass fat white men who were going to bitch no matter what happened so appeasement was impossible, anyway. I feel sorry for everybody involved, they came pretty close to making something really funny but eventually succumbed to the same prejudiced bullshit they were originally trying to lampoon.
