Speaking of that vote, checked the roll call and it was 405-11 with 3 present. All 11 no votes were Republicans. But what stood out to me was that Omar was one of the present votes.

Awful vote and look. She put out a statement explaining her decision that basically reads "what about these other historical crimes?" And make no mistake, the examples she lists like the treatment of Native Americans and the slave trade should be recognized for what they were but that is a pathetic excuse to not recognize this one.

She also joined 15 Republicans (403-16) in voting against sanctions for Turkey over their actions in Syria.

She's in one of those districts she's safe unless she gets primaried. Or the borders get redrawn.

Her district is the bluest in Minnesota (D+26) so if Republicans redrew the borders they would likely make it even bluer in the hopes of concentrating the Democratic vote there and winning more seats elsewhere in the state. If Democrats redrew the districts they might try to divvy up parts of her district to add them to swing districts to make those bluer.

Realistically, for Ilhan Omar to lose in a general election, you would need a Democratic legislature gerrymandering to try to win more seats and then have a red wave election.

Making the correct vote while voicing her issues surrounding it is even something she has even done in the past - hence voting (correctly) in favour of the House resolution condemning antisemitism & bigotry even though it was shamefully called as a direct response to her comments that week. That bill was used as a cudgel at Omar herself but obviously that didn't change the fact that bigotry and antisemitism is bad and she still voted accordingly.

Acknowledging the Armenian genocide is the right thing to do, always. You can voice your additional issues alongside your vote, while making an forceful push that it should not have come to the recent events, and that there are further issues to provide recognition to as well.

I've been on her side a lot but nah I don't need to defend her choosing to stand on the side here.

Yep. And like you pointed out she didn't even mention the Armenian genocide by name in her statement you linked above. The reasons "all lives matter" is an asinine response to "black lives matter" are the same reasons "all genocides matter" is an asinine response to "the Armenian genocide matters". If there was a resolution condemning the American slave trade and a Republican voted "abstain" because "why aren't we also condemning the Roman slave trade" he would be justifiably shot out of a cannon into the sun.

Her whataboutism game is incredibly strong here though, so we can give her credit for that at least.

The comparison is poor in this case because it'd be like if BLM was a bunch of hypocrites who liked it when the racism wasn't against them, but then when it is one particular thing it's totally A-OK.

Our foreign policy in this country is disgusting for the most part. This isn't a hypothetical, it is fact. I agree it'd be easier if she just did exactly what you said, but she is also right that this was a stunt and I am OK with her wanting no part in it.
