I'm thinking something like, all the players start - and they start grinding and looting and trying to find rare equipment in the houses as players are gradually killed off by stronger and stronger spawns (and possibly players who go rogue)

The world shrinks into a raid boss

...

Now, Realm of the Mad God SORT OF does this during World End events (when Oryx is defeated)... so I guess it's hypothetically possible

Path of exile had a cool battle royale mode where you'd run around and kill monsters to gear up before fighting each other, but your ultimate goal was still to kill off other players. I don't think battle royale as a concept is compatible with PvE.

Dude, it's crazy that you post this. I literally had very similar ideas yesterday - mainly from playing Battle Royale on COD Mobile - but I was just like... it would be awesome to play a BR with RPG elements.

I've been weirdly psychic when it comes to game ideas... usually as soon as I post it, something like it comes out in a couple days.

Obviously said game was probably in development for years, so it's just kinda funny

Pvp and pve don't mix well. Examples would be Destiny 2 and the dark zone in the Division has never been fun unless your with friends.

I could see it working if there were some factor that allowed you to "win" a final round like fastest clear time. A good player needs to be able to beat a bad player in a BR, even if their gear is worse. A lot of RPGs just turn into number games so it's going to be hard to beat someone in a DPS race if their gear is better.

So I guess the question is how do you make skill a factor without making the RPG elements feel pointless?
