I've played them both, and and am replaying FFXII now (just started).

I remember when XII came out and seeing that it was "Ivalice", hoping there was a connection.

But I remember after beating XII (when it first released), feeling like there was only very loose connections. Even if loose, I don't remember if/what they were.

So are there any big connections?

Just the same setting (on paper anyway), nothing significant. Vagrant Story also takes place there, but again nothing significant.

There's actually a direct sequel to FFXII. Nobody knows about it because the game sucked so much. I still have it, though

Is it Revenant Wings? I had this on DS and I think I didn't get past the first like 10 minutes.

Revenant Wings isn't that bad, it's not good, but it isn't terrible.

Yes. Its the same world iirc 12 takes place before tactics. Some cataclysmic event happens that set the world back tech wise and killed most of the races off before tactics.

Id love a game about said event. Have it so while the world gets wrecked the heroes at least stopped it from being completely destroyed. A game with a bittersweet ending can be nice once im awhile.

Yeah. I replayed FFT earlier this year. Would love to see a detailed example of how FFXII becomes FFT, as far as geography and such. I doubt that exists though. Squenix tends to leave things vague and have such a large geography difference between connected games that its hard to definitively connect them

to my knowledge FFT takes place at or near the end of the ivalice timeline

I remeber mustido (think that was his name he used a gun) showing ramza this junkyard with airships and what not and said it was from a lost civilization which is why I believe tactics is after 12

Probably wouldn't be very interesting.

There's some text somewhere in the game that suggests Zodiark destroys everything and that's that.

Vagrant Story takes place a few centuries later, after magic is gone and because of the whole story by... TGC's son? Of the real war events during the War of the Lions.

The other connections TC is looking for are the espers you obtain in 12. Half of them were bosses in tactics that were the zodiac spirits. And one was the zodiark summon you can get

As far as I understand, the realm of FFT takes place way to the west of FFXII's. It's beyond the impassable sandsea.

Montblanc from FFTA returns as the Clan Centurio leader in FF12, but the link between those games is lightly implied. The link between FF12 and the games that come after is much more explicit: Vaan, Penelo, and Al-Cid appear in FFTA2, and Montblanc returns there as well with all the named members of Clan Centurio.

According to the FF wiki, Tactics takes place over a thousand years later and there was a cataclysm that destroyed much of Ivalice after XII.

Are TA and TA2 worth playing? I played a little bit of TA years ago when it first came out and turned my nose up at it tbh. But I feel like over the years I've heard it's decent/good

TA2 is fun and is much more mechanically sound than T imo, but there's pretty much no story. I've sunk 50 hours into it and I'm only in the upper 30's.

Mechanics-wise it's a bit of an apples to oranges deal. They all have the same core combat mechanics, but A1 and A2 have more jobs, and five / seven races where certain jobs are restricted to certain races. Both games rely far more on sidequests than the main quest over FFT. A2 takes the edge in terms of content, and steps up the game by introducing legitimate boss monsters. Though it it really irks me that they completely eliminated random battles in A2 in favor of select few repeating encounters. There's also that issue with A2 of the RNG for all your potential actions being preset before that battle begins.

The Advance games also have laws and judges, which are almost unanimously agreed upon as being a major pain; A2 reduces the penalty for breaking laws, but also introduces some absolutely ridiculous laws to compensate.

Story-wise, FFT still has the best by far. A1's is decent, and has good moments, though it's ultimately a subject of controversy (especially coming off the heels of the original). A2's story is an absolute fucking mess, assuming you can be convinced that a 'story' exists in the first place.

It should also be mentioned that A1 has a surprisingly good soundtrack, especially for a GBA game. A2 has about one memorable original song, while the bulk of its soundtrack is just ripped from A1 and FF12.
