About twenty years ago, while playing Monkey Island I, I thought of a costume based around a minor character - Bob the skeleton.

The idea was a taller costume (the wearer's head would be in the center of Bob's chest - he or she would be able to see with a fairly wide field of vision) with one of those inflatable skull head on top of it. The skull head needs to have a fair amount of velcro around it and a string going to the child's hand (you'll understand if you've actually played Monkey Island I.)

Child (or adult) pulls the string, skull head comes off (in theory, you want the skull head to roll down the arm, into the hand, where it is tossed back up onto the neck.)

Just avoid those root beer barrels.
