Losers that couldn't make it as real journalists went and took gaming journalism to annoying political levels to prove they were deep and could write think pieces, when all we wanted was gaming insight.

no i wanted actual news about the industry including the toxic things that go on in it

again its thanks to kotaku we know just how bad crunch culture in gaming is

They had a little good stuff, but yeah.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/hostilities-rise-inside-g-o-media-over-autoplay-video-ads-and-politics-11572392147
The publisher of the former Gawker Media websites is showing video advertisements that play automatically on its sites article pages and with the sound on, igniting resistance from staffers who oppose the tactic.

G/O Media Inc., which publishes former Gawker Media sites including Deadspin and Gizmodo, began running sound-on autoplay ads to boost the impressions it could deliver for Farmers Insurance Group, according to people familiar with the situation.

Editorial staffers pushed back, arguing in Slack messages to company executives and in a public post on the companys websites that the practice creates a poor site experience that can drive users away. Management later took the post down.

A G/O Media spokesman said the autoplay ads test has been running in front of 6% of its users.

The Farmers deal, which began last month and is worth $1 million, required G/O Media to deliver nearly 43.5 million ad impressions through September 2020, according to internal G/O Media emails reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

The publishers media and ad operations teams believed it was unlikely G/O Media could deliver that many, according to the emails.

After failing to hit ad impression targets within the first few weeks of the campaign, G/O Media decided to start playing videos with the sound on as soon as pages loaded, according to people familiar with the matter. That included stand-alone video ads for Farmers inside article pages as well as preroll ads before editorial videos.

The ads are performing incredibly well against target reach and engagement with the audience, said the G/O Media spokesman, referring to metrics such as clicks.

A Farmers Insurance spokesman confirmed the company had approved the use of autoplay video ads with the sound on. To increase consumer engagement with the Farmers brand, we are running online autoplay video ads, via G/O Media, with the sound-on feature, a Farmers spokesman said. We will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of this program and make adjustments, as necessary.
...
Some G/O Media executives have argued to editorial staffers that autoplay video is a common practice, used by bigger media sites including ESPN.com and CNN.com.

But the response by consumers to autoplay video depends in part on the kind of site they are visiting, said Nick Pappas, chief executive of ad agency SwellShark LLC. Its a bit different because you generally expect to get video from CNN and ESPN, he said. When you are going to a site where you read more often than you watch, its not a good user experience.

Autoplay video is one tactic used by publishers increasingly feeling squeezed as more digital ad dollars are captured by Google and Facebook Inc. By playing videos automatically instead of only when visitors hit play, publishers can generate more views for advertisers.
...
G/O Media management consistently has butted heads with staffers. Another area of contention is a mandate for Deadspin writers to stick to sports and avoid writing about politics and other topics unless they intersect with sports. The editorial staff has argued that posts on politics and other matters, even if unrelated to sports, are often better traffic drivers.

The tension has led to the departures of some key staffers, including former Deadspin editor in chief Megan Greenwell, who said she resigned partly because of the stick-to-sports mandate and scammy advertising practices. Barry Petchesky, Deadspins deputy editor, tweeted on Tuesday that he was fired for not sticking to sports.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/go-media-tells-deadspin-staff-in-leaked-memo-stick-to-sports

Deadspin has often featured important politics and media articles, often in a subvertical titled The Concourse, and has poked fun at criticism of its decision to write about other non-sports topics, even selling Stick to Sports merchandise on its site.

But non-sports coverage has also often been a traffic-booster for the site. Sources have told The Daily Beast that, among other articles, writer David Roths political commentary often tops the sites most-read articles, as has writer Drew Magarys annual haters guide to the Williams-Sonoma holiday catalog.

The tug-of-war over Deadpins editorial mandate to stick to sports has been a long-running source of internal frustration and amusement for the sites staff. Mondays memo put the mandate in writing for all to see, however.

When former Deadspin editor in chief Megan Greenwell left the site in August, she claimed G/O management had mandated sports-only coverage, noting it was one reason she could not continue at the company. That's not something I feel I can ethically do, she said.

Mondays memo is just the latest in a series of decisions that have caused friction between the websites and new management.

Sounds like a remarkably stupid decision to me. If people just want sports results they can get that from mainstream sites. Surely people would go to Deadspin because they follow the writers and journalists there. Otherwise why would you bother?

Considering they've lost two people over it clearly the change is drastic for their staff.

IGN is full of people who want to water down games like COD MW (2019) because the violence being realistic upset them, and some of the comments like "pillow fights with terrorists", or "why can't you take them alive", and claiming the game was to intense as if war is some sweet loving act instead of the brutal nightmare MW accurately displays.

This is all while they kiss Fortnite's ass, IGN is full of people who are snowflakes that can't handle realistic violence so they bash games like Gears and MW.

If they want to read/write articles about politics, they can go to CNN, MSNBC, or any other website centered on politics. If the site owners want to focus on sports, you write about sports. If you refuse, then you should be removed.

Whether that hurts the site's revenue will be seen.

Okay? They're leaving the site so they can write what they want so what's the issue?

I'm gonna guess that the editors of the site know what their readers want more than the conglomerate that bought them out but I guess we will see.

The Bethesda blackout came after a year of reporting that was not always flattering to the Maryland-based publisher...

Wow, that whole thing is uh....they're certainly dedicated, to put it nicely. As the market has shown, most people would like to see this day-to-day focus applied to world events and things that are of major importance, rather than gossip against certain game companies that could put a dent in stock or even end up harming the business and its workers all due to nothing but small rumors.

Kotaku's response actually reminds me of a scene from a Spider-Man comic I just read, featuring J Jonah Jameson himself. After recalling a time he ruined a man's reputation with a string of negative editorials, he proclaims "my business is selling newspapers. If a crusade will sell a newspaper, then J. Jonah Jameson will have a Crusade!" only to look back on it all and defend his actions with the thought "I explained it was a matter of high moral principle(!)..."

So they can try to claim that too in hindsight, but people literally aren't buying it. The "principle" of harassing other people, stoking race/sex/class division and attacking other people over nothing in an attempt to get clicks, was what they stood for.

What an Earth are you talking about?

You know everything that Kotaku reported on ended up being absolutely correct right? Despite Bethesda's outright lie used in an attempt to discredit the reporting.

You're also completely ignoring how absolutely shit Bethesda handled their relationship with Human Head over Prey 2. Yet another thing Kotaku reported on.

Bethesda has a history of being shady with their developers. Like have you considered who is actually leaking this info to Kotaku?
