The real problem is the insane sentencing ranges our justice system has, which just opens things up for disparity and unfair treatment. Of course, the threat of the huge max possible sentence exists to try and coerce the accused into taking a plea deal and not even go to trial, to the point that it's often smarter/easier to just admit guilt and take the deal even if innocent rather than risk it.
