On 1 February 2019, Sea Shepherd reported that one of its boats patrolling the area to remove and deter the setting of illegal nets had been attacked by fishing boats for the second time in a month. It has also been reported that the efforts of the Mexican navy to deter illegal fishing have not been successful; the fishermen intimidate the navy by ramming their boats and while the navy has given chase they have not responded with force. Some fishermen are apparently becoming desperate because they have found it necessary to borrow money from trafficking cartels to replace their illegal nets. On 13 March 2019 it was announced that around 10 vaquitas were left, after Sea Shepherd found one of the porpoises had drowned in a gillnet, which was likely set out for totoaba fish. A possible recovery was not ruled out, as calves are still seen.
