Researchers found that 63% of men were funnier than the average woman.

Researchers from Aberystwyth University and the University of North Carolina analysed 28 studies which looked at how funny around 5,000 people were.

They wanted to see whether the stereotype that men are funnier than women was true.

Writing in Psychology Today, lead researcher Dr Gil Greengross said: "This stereotype is shared by both men and women - but of course, just because it exists does not mean it is true."

In many of the studies they looked at, men and women were asked to write a funny caption to accompany a cartoon - and then independent judges rated their funniness without knowing their gender.

Dr Gil said the results found that "to the best of our knowledge, on average, men appear to have higher humour production ability than women".

He says evidence suggests humour plays a "major role in mating".

The lecturer said women tend to look for a sense of humour in a partner as it is "strongly correlated with intelligence".

"Men, on the other hand, prefer women who laugh at their humour.

"That means that over our evolutionary history, men likely had to compete harder with other men to impress women with their sense of humour."

I don't think it's a particular thing with women so much as the extra perceptual baggage they have going on. If you've ever had an office job, you'll know how, even in the same context, people will react differently to men and women doing the same sort of rude things in a conversation.

A guy cuts you off, whatever. A girl cuts you off, it gets called out and made into a thing.

Funny is subjective.
Both men and women can have the ability to be funny.

However, it's typically easier to find more humorous men with a talent to make people laugh than it is to find as many women. A large part of this is that being funny is a very common icebreaker as far as men with dating interests approaching women. And many women reward a man who's got an attractive sense of humor. This incentivizes more men to hone their ability to make a woman (and her peers) laugh in order to increase their charm. It makes sense that more men than women would know how to do this since modern men are still expected to do the majority of approaching.

The average woman, in contrast, actually has LESS incentive to practice this talent romantically since men typically prioritize other aspects when it comes to determining a woman's attractiveness. Of course a woman can have a great sense of humor and some men find that appealing, but less men find it impressive. This is partly do to what I mentioned above: it's easier to find men who can wow a crowd with comedy than it is to find women with the same talent.

There are women out there specifically looking for men who can make them laugh with witty repartee.

I wouldnt be surprised by this finding, and the reasoning makes sense, but Im curious about their methodology with the judges.

The judges demographic could easily influence the kind of humor they are receptive to. I also dont know if women find other women funnier, less funny, or the same as men and if thats accounted for in the judge selection.

There are funny women, it's just that there is a clear divide on the genders. Without any evidence I would say maybe 80/90 percent men get Comedy Central specials? The problem is that the remaining women are being overshadowed by non-funny women like Amy Schumer and Kerryn Feehan. Kerryn Feehan for those who don't know had a comedy battle with a heavy guy and all her jokes were about his weight and how disgusting he looks. He came back with some real shiners.
