Current Events > Is there any reason for me to play Peacewalker and Ground Zeroes before MGS V?

Ive beaten 1-3, watched a walkthrough of 4 since Ive never owned a PS3. Ive heard the story isnt that great in V, so do I need to play the other 2 games that came before it first?

Isnt Ground Zeroes really short? I could give that one a go if it is.

Oh and portable ops comes before GZ, too, right? Yeah I also dont feel like watching a walkthrough or reading a summary of that one.

I guess what Im asking is, does TPP stand well on its own? Am I going to feel like Im in the dark if I didnt play the games that came between it and 3?

do you already have MGSV?

because if not, it's better to go with the complete edition that comes with GZ.

and while I haven't played PW, there are characters and events that appear and are referenced in MGSV, and you might enjoy it more if you're more acquainted with them.

Yeah I bought it and GZ like 4 years ago and still havent played either.

Peace Walker is fine story-wise, it just doesn't add much to the MGS overarching plot.

Ground Zeroes is excellent

Never played PW but GZ is real quick and I'd say its worth playing/watching before starting MGSV

You really don't.

You could read a synopsis of both and understand everything enough. I'd argue NOT playing Ground Zeroes would actually benefit MGS V as it kind of screams some of the plot twists if you pay attention.

Bare bones is this

Peace Walker = Big Boss fights a rogue CIA group and stops a nuclear apocalypse, has to deal with his trauma from MGS 3 in the process. Accepts his role as Big Boss, is then attacked by a double agent who works for Major Zero, and formally declares their current mother base Outer Heaven as a result.

Ground Zero = Big Boss has to infiltrate Guantanamo Bay to rescue a child soldier who worked with him as well as the double agent from the end of Peace Walker in order to keep them from leaking details to Major Zero. This turns out to be a diversion to get him away from Outer Heaven, and Major Zeroes strike force XOF infiltrates and destroys the base. During his escape, Big Boss is involved in a helicopter crash and falls into a coma.

Ground Zeroes is like the prologue to Phantom Pain. You could understand Phantom Pain just fine without it, and I think it probably helps if you played Peacewalker first (I didn't >_>) to fully understand all the characters, but it's a short experience with a few different scenarios to play around in.

if you have GZ play it. Its short and fun as hell

peace walker is important but you can get away with a synopsis if you really have to
