So many games after it became prevalently hits an following the soldiers, but none of them had the quality Valve did so it became an annoying battle of attrition. Regenerating health helped but not enough.

Yeah outside of like Arma or Battlefield with how long distances can be I don't see the point in modeling bullets.

It's more that avoiding bullets being used overall is preferable. Or how dusk does it. Or doom, even, making sure it's not the majority.

And if they wanted to model weapon accuracy, in order to hit something you'd have to stop, spend a couple seconds carefully aiming down your sights before firing each round

Half Life 1 had plenty of enemy variety that makes it feel a little more grounded in the realm of classic FPS than it does in other ways like level design and scripted events

. Unfortunately Valve saw a ton of people always gushing about how cool the parts with the soldiers were and ended up making 90% of Half-Life 2 just you fighting new versions of said soldiers. That was the real death knell of classic FPS games, even before COD really took off running and before Battlefield became anything except a niche oddity

It's more that it kept being used alongside static health. Half-Life 2 was a big example of the problem with this, in that when an enemy damages you immediately it largely becomes a battle of attrition. Regenerating health, while usually boring, is a needed mechanic when hitscan is the primary.

Yeah, Half-Life 1 did great with it, but other games took the wrong queues. It doesn't help that Medal of Honor, Spec ops, and Delta Warrior all launched around the same time to great acclaim, so the era of the military shooter started. Games started aiming for the cinematic style of Half-Life over the action focused styles of Doom and Quake. You're right that 2 was worse about it, though it did do a lot right outside that.
