Yes to both. I 've found that if I can stay awake for 15 minutes or so, that usually breaks the cycle, but I'm often really, really sleepy if I wake up mid-dream, so this can be hard to pull off. Maybe the effort of staying awake is why it works.

Yeah, not fun at all. I don't get nightmares very often, but I was really glad to discover the stay-awake trick.

It's happened a few times. I usually don't have, or else don't remember, dreams these days though. Well, I think what I actually do a lot of times is dream that I'm lying in bed awake trying to sleep.

One time in college, I skipped class to finish a dream with a particularly interesting story. Alarm clock went off, I was like lolno I wanna see what happens next, went back to sleep lol.
