The sample size being very large doesn't mitigate the factors that taint the data. People don't suddenly get better at spelling because you poll more of them.

You have yet to come up with a reason why Lickitung is hard to spell. Its exactly as it sounds and follows the typical naming conventions found in other names. There are only a few ways it could be spelled, so youre bound to get it right even if you dont know it. There are no extra letters or anything that dont necessarily always get pronounced like in Exeggcute. It is simply not hard enough to spell to explain it doing so poorly.

TPP alone ensures that Venomoth is absolutely not in the running for this. Venonat seems like a decent pick, though.

I just named 7 easy misspellings off the top of my head. It's not as easy as you think. If you don't spell Licky or Tongue like the actual words it opens up a whole can of worms on combinations

Honestly I would say it's as hard as Exeggcute to spell thinking in terms of potential errors. Exeggutor is the worst though.

when i first started doing those sporcle quizes, Lickitung, Kangaskhan, Victreebel and Exeggutor were the ones i'd often miss coz of spelling.
i find Lickitung too awful to be forgettable. Cubone/Marowak, Magmar, Krabby/Kingler, Psyduck/Golduck, Tangela, Paras/Parasect and Mr Mime are all more forgetable imo.

Doduo/Dodrio was the first pokemon you saw in Pokemon Snap, Ponyta is pretty much the only fire pokemon you get in Gen 4 if you don't pick Chimchar, and Lorelei's first pokemon she sends out was a Dewgong. Seaking has fuck yea Seaking. that's how i usualy remember those lines >_>

A bit surprised Eevee is that low on that list because it's pretty easy to spell, a very popular Pokemon to begin with, and it's also been legitimized as a secondary mascot to Pikachu thanks to the Let's Go.

Gotta be honest I don't think these ever happen. Like, Pokemon's whole thing is taking words and not spelling them correctly so you kinda just know "tongue" is wrong.

Like either you're either gonna know "tongue" is wrong or you're gonna assume "lick" is right. I don't see anything like "Likitongue" actually being a guess on how to spell it, that's just the perfect storm of wrong.

To be fair, I'm not saying misspellings don't knock Lickitung down a little bit. I just question how much.

Like, Lickitung is 5% below Krabby, which means based on the number of plays, Lickitung would have had to be misspelled so completely that people never even stumbled into the correct spelling over 287,848 times.

That just seems a bit much to me.

I guarantee every single misspelling of Lickitung listed in this topic has been used, along with at least 12 others we haven't mentioned yet.

On a different note, though, I never thought of it as "licky tongue". Just "lick" and "tongue". If I wrote it "how it sounds" I'd never come up with "licky" but that'll vary with different people I guess.

On the topic of otherwise forgettable pokemon being more memorable simply by association...Wigglytuff. That is probably the most likely of the gen 1 pokemon that is in an evolution chain to actually be forgotten (when the rest of the chain isn't)

Doesn't that Sporcle quiz accept a name the moment you've typed it correctly, even if you're about to type an extra letter? I would assume "Victreebell" is by far the most common misspelling of Victreebel.

Lickitung is in the same neighborhood of a lot of moderately difficult ones that are all probably being dinged by various degrees

Keep in mind the dynamic of how Sprocle quizzes work too. The time limit is a factor as is the order you will think of a Pokemon. If you don't think of Lickitung until you've got like 3 minutes left it may not feel prudent to waste time thinking about him if you miss a time or two when you're running low on time. Compare to Gyarados who is probably one of the earliest to think of and yeah.

Sprocle should be used as evidence but not a definitive guide-- just a lot of factors going in there

I never argued it's not one of the later ones thought of, cause it is. Lot of things going against it.

I removed all the Pokemon that were owned by an important trainer in the main games (gym leaders, rival, evil Boss, Elite 4/Champion) in battles you are forced to have (so no rematches or B2/W2 World Tournament) and the anime (Ash and his friends and team rocket). I also removed the legendaries, mega evolution (Beedrill) and alternate forms (Diglett, Farfetch'd, Grimer).

We are down to 19 Pokemon

Definitely worse than bottom quarter. I could see maybe trying to argue one or two of the ones right above it as also being candidates for last, but spelling clearly isn't the only reason it's so far behind everything else, since things like Gyarados did fine. If spelling is coming into play, it's because people are thinking of Lickitung within the last like, 2-3 Pokemon, and running out of time. It's a whole percentage point below the next lowest, and a whole 5% below something like Krabby/Kingler, which is like nearly 300,000 plays.

I understand now your deep love for Lickitung, though, so I guess I'll just agree to disagree.

Spearow was among the first 20 pokemon (being generous) encountered by probably > 90% of everyone who played gen 1. That makes an impression.

Is Fearow a standout popular superstar? No, of course not. But there are too many non-legendary pokemon who aren't part of an evolution chain who show up way, way later and way, way less frequently and way, way less in the way than Fearow for it to be remotely in contention.

Jigglypuff is literally an OG Super Smash character. 0% chance it's them.
