Dude, I get bad to get into fights as a hobby. Of course it's escape, there's nothing wrong with that.

P much this. I wish I was gullible enough to not need a hobby.

All hobbies are escapism by definition. The real question is whether or not you consider escapism an inherently bad thing or not.

I was just wondering if hobbies are normally supposed to be escapist, because a lot of my hobbies are like that. I figured that it was a sign that I didn't enjoy life.

Then I started thinking about whether or not I should be making strides to improve the quality of my life, rather than figuratively hiding in a hole for a few hours, then returning to it.

Absolutely.

Art is escapism pretending to be a pathway to somewhere, so I feel like I'm making progress when I'm probably not.
Gaming is escapism used to fill in time + keep me distracted.
Social Medias (eg. Discord) is escapism to mask my lack of physical friendships. (Granted, I'm connected with people I knew from school so this one somewhat counts?)

That's the point of them, and its ok everyone needs something to help them escape sometimes. It only becomes a problem when they neglect the real world for it.

You need to get paid, you may however get paid for useless bullshit which isn't very "real". What you do as a hobby can be productive and useful to people making a real impact on the world.

They are a escape from my reality yes as they give my mind more fuel to wonder. This can be said for many forms of entertainment I enjoy too.
