He was second going into final, so unless first place made a really dumb under-bet, his only chance was to hope Emma missed final. So he should have been expecting to get the answer right himself. And she knew that if she didn't bet enough to beat him even if he doubled his money, she was probably going to lose. And he knew that. But if she tried psyching him out by betting less than that amount, his bet wasn't enough to win anyway.
