That's legitimately one of the worst ideas I've ever heard of in regards to school time. Schools, especially high schools, need to start later in the day than they already do, and they shouldn't last as long into the evening as they do. It is insane that we expect kids to sit in class for that long every day. As sentimental as I am about the long summer vacations I enjoyed as a kid, that's where they should add instructional time.

Play is one of the most important ways for kids to develop. No thank you to this as well.

I was really liking her for a while, but she faded and this is an absolute deal breaker. I could be all "fuck you I got mine" and not care what kids today have to deal with but that's... No, I don't see that as useful.

You know that problem we have where kids have to wake up early to go to school and arent getting enough sleep so their performance isnt as good as it can be?

Lets make it worse by extending the school hours.

my high school day was a 545 wake up to catch at 640 bus to get to a 700 homeroom. last class ended at 320, to get off the bus at 430, to have several hours of homework to get to bed between 9 and 11. That's not at all right, or healthy, and people want to add more? Are you fucking kidding me?

So the link is saying that she wants to make the school week be 5 days a week, 8 am to 6 pm. The main reason is that it lines up better with parents work schedule.

Nope, hate it. I like going to school later, but staying until 6 pm? 5 days a week? No. That means basically no after school activities and no sports in the fall/winter because it'll be dark when you get out.

Most students have checked out mentally before school even starts. Having them remain longer is gonna make the final new hours all the more tormenting for everyone.
So the bill is supposed to improve the parent's schedules at the expense of the children and teachers who are directly gonna be affected by it.

Its a crappy idea, speaking as a non-American but a teacher. Here in Japan, most kids do club after and their schedule usually lets out by 6 but at least its something they enjoy and doesn't burden every child and teacher

She might want to first tackle the issues of keeping students interested in attending public schooling in the first place.

10 hour school days are not going to help underprivileged youth so turned off from sitting in a classroom and emotionally beaten down that the rare occasions they do show up it's more for what's free in the cafeteria than the lessons taught...

If this is based on my comments, I made no favor supporting how Japanese schools = better. I merely displayed how they use their time after school that involves them coming back later but not needing more study time.

Furthermore, suicide causes are generally from bullying or home problems that no one catches on to until its too late. Surely not much of a different reasoning to American teens. No teenager decides to die because "we go to school year round".

Those two hours wouldn't do shit, I'd say it even harms unless like 30 mins-1 hour of that extra two hours is break time interspersed throughout the day.

If anything, I'd vouch for longer school year, no kid needs such a long ass summer break where they aren't studying and forgetting crap (though actually no so much since you know, they're kids and their memory is fucking insane at the age).

Unless it REALLY changed since I last went, school always struck me as lasting much longer than it needed to. Never mind that most kids spend half the time they already have to be there, mostly on autopilot.

Thanks for not reading it, basically in plain speak she is funding babysitting for elementary school kids after school. Not sure I feel a national way is the way to do it, but the discussion is worth having on how to get kids on tract in the beginning

Less holidays and shorter days is a good idea. Getting up at 8am for a class at 9am as a kid is the worst shit and doesn't help anyone
It's even worse in uni when you have to get up at 5am for a 6am class

The holidays dont really need to be so long either

how about we build a society where we work less for the same pay

instead of, you know, fucking up other systems even more to further entrench backwards conditions like working so many hours in a year

americans are extremely overworked despite being extremely productive. time to change that to benefit us as workers, instead of pretending to care about working families by encouraging policies that entrench rather than relieve shitty conditions.

kamala's bill for example mentions how little vacation and sick time the average american gets, and the response to that is to better align schools with that. which is insane. the right solution is more vacation and sick time across the board.

Similar story man, I woke up at 5am to have time to catch a bus at 6:15, only getting to school at 7:30 and class starting at 7:40. Similar bus ride time home. It's a big reason I applied to the state boarding school. I would be incredibly irritable every other day because I simply didn't get sleep.
