I look back at XY more fondly after Gen VII and VIII. Gen 5 would be my favorite if I didn't like HGSS so much.

I agree that the best games were released then.

But I'd still have to say that the golden age was in the first two gens, when it was fresh and exciting, and just a massive craze.

I generally agree with this. That was still when the series was still generally adding to the next game more than they were taking out. The games generally had robust post games (especially, Emerald, Platinum, and BW2). They improved mechanics. There was a sense of progress. Not everything they tried worked, but there were still attempts at trying.

Besides a jump to full 3D graphics, XY was the first series where I had difficulty pointing to improvements compared to the older games. S&M it was easier to point at the things the games didn't have rather than the improvements.

I still played Gen VI and VII a lot and had fun with them, but it was always measured with disappointment for what was lost.

HGSS = Fantastic
BW = Boring
B2W2 = Only game I've ever skipped
XY = Really fun

Though it helped that this was back when each new game was on a more advanced system (until Gen 5, which probably factored in to why I didn't like it that much), so each game looked and felt like a more improved product.

Gen 8 on the Switch pretty much like how Gen 7 did on the 3DS, though, which is kinda disappointing.

As someone who cared way more about collecting than battling, those first 2 gens were 10/10. By the gen 3 postgame I started to grow tired and was never able to recapture that magic.
