I checked the UW website. She is listed as a lecturer. It is extremely rare/unlikely a lecturer would become a professor at basically any university. Especially at the UW. Being a lecturer there is not a good job.

Considering I was lucky to make 30k a year as a lecturer, no, I would say it is not the same difference. If a lecture was a professor I wouldn't have moved to Japan just to get a research professor job.

Most of the ones I knew in Seattle worked two jobs simultaneously to get a living wage. So basically same classes at two different universities in Seattle. Actually I am pretty sure Holly Barker is doing that herself.

The thing is i don't think adjunct positions were ever designed for people to be full time / multiple adjuncts at mulitple universities. They were more for people who had full time jobs in industry and wanted to teach part time. But some people make their whole living by adjuncting but it's really not paid enough to be worthwhile

Adjunct was created as a way to turn academia into a gig economy. They also got people to villianize tenure and look the other way as tuition rises exponentially and they exploit the student loan system to get guaranteed government subsidies. Then they do a massive "progressive" propaganda campaign to disguise the fact that their claims of diversity is just a cover for extorting international (read upper middle class Chinese) students by charging them a higher tuition rate. Universities in America are some of the most exploitive, anti-labor institutions in the country but they have everyone convinced they're some bastion of leftism because they embrace progressive social policies since it costs them nothing and provides the perfect shield.
