The last thing we need is an awful country like China to police better. Many people will simply disappear.

If anything this destabilization gives the PRC motivation to come in and sweep Hong Kong up. Xi Jinping has repeatedly shown that he will stop at nothing to contain them and Carrie Lam, the CEO of Hong Kong, is blatantly being Beijing's puppet.

yeah i am expecting a tiananmen square style crackdown soon. I am scared for people who live there

Oh, that's absolutely coming, and would be coming regardless of what the protestors were doing(unless they just went home and accepted the creeping Chinese police state. Then they would just quietly disappear the ones they could identify).

Yeah maybe they can talk Xi into giving Hong Kong up. Or maybe if they keep their heads down long enough, China will forget they exist and they'll be free to do what they want.

You know that unrest and tyranny that Americans keep their guns for? Countries like China are that tyrannical and diplomacy will not get evil out of power.

Why are there protests in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is part of China but as a former British colony it has some autonomy and people have more rights.
The protests started in June against plans to allow extradition to the mainland - which many feared would undermine the city's freedoms.
Profile: Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong
The bill was withdrawn in September but demonstrations continued and now call for full democracy and an inquiry into police behaviour.
Clashes between police and activists have become increasingly violent and in October the city banned all face masks.
hmm...i thought the violence started from the protestors. police were brought in to protect property. it came to the point where gangs were used to deter protestors from some stores. the violence escalated from all sides and we are where we are today. i think the attention this got encouraged more protests.

@

It legit started out in the first few weeks as a peaceful protest where people actually registered with the government and was given a green light for "legal protests". But then when that didn't work people started getting violent. And then all the atrocities from the police started showing up and the protesters responded in kind to where we have this situation that we have today.
oh yeah. people were getting silently taken early on werent they and are still. thats why the masks to hide identity but it also gave anonymity for the more violent activists to take action. i noticed the term protestors is changed to now activists.

Btw for those that believe that Hong Kong is in fight for democracy: Hong Kong already has a democratic system in place, but the problem is who they're electing to represent them in this representative democracy. All of the Hong Kong's past and present CEOs have been in the Pro Beijing camp because the citizens elected the officials that selected them.

Yeah and if America elects a President and they turn tyrant, then everyone should just accept that since they were elected via democracy and didn't just seize control from out of nowhere.

Yeah, for example see all of human history that was written in the blood of men. "Violence solves nothing" is a lie as old as civilization that's spread by the same people who used violence to gain power to stop others from doing the same

In this God forsaken world there is at least one thing more powerful than guns and violence.

That's all the US (and the rest of the world) can do, that's all the US should do, that's the only way to really beat China (or anyone else), and that's one of the very few things where Trump at least has the right idea.

This is true, but if they were to do that then they understand the consequences for that action, the international response would be huge.

This is the most ignorant and utterly wrong statement in this topic. Might as well invoke Godwin's Law and ask were the allies as bad as the Nazi's during the war? Also doesn't that mean our entire country (US) is based on immorality because of revolution?
