I only say it to my mother over text message anymore as she lives in another country.

Making a point to be around people when they need you or even when they don't is a good way to show your love for them.

wife and kids, everyday. everyone else, never. my mom raised us to be cold and saying something like that would be soft. my mom would be shocked if i said that to her.

To my wife; quite often. Maybe daily. My kids, parents or sister; not that often. It's not something I heard a lot as a kid growing up so I guess I am just repeating the behavior I grew up with.
