As an adult with no kids it boiled down to being a money exchange so to speak, and often that money was better spent elsewhere. After having kids though, my Christmas spirit was rekindled and now I look forward to it every year. The joy and excitement on their precious little faces makes me so happy. One of my favorites things about Christmas is finding the right gifts for my wife, parents, in-laws, and siblings. Like you said, when you get them something they really like and they l they're happy about it, it makes me way happier than when I get any gifts myself.
