It personally gives me no taste at all like sugar or salt. Doesn't add any flavors for me in food, it's not spicy to me at all so now I'm thinking all black pepper does is help make the food look esthetically better looking and that's it. I'm sure there's health benefits from them too? Someone educate me please.

Pre-ground pepper is useless.

Freshly ground pepper is THE SHIT, my man. Try it and then get back to me.

(I'm not joking. Like, go get some whole peppercorns, crack em into pieces, and smell the awesome fruity/spicy aroma that comes out)

Also as far as dishes that it's specifically useful for, I can think of two right off the top of my head:

Pasta puttanesca, which uses a lot of freshly ground black pepper

Pepper chicken, the Chinese-American stir fry which uses cracked black pepper as one of its main flavors.

Black pepper is one of my very favorite seasonings, lol.

It's not particularly spicy, no, but it adds a really nice fresh flavor to pretty much everything.

Explain what fresh flavor means. Adding cilantro makes things fresh for me.

This. However, TC is guilty of accusing everyone of only seeing their own experience ("I've never seen that, so it doesn't happen!") while also doing it himself ("I have seen it, so everyone else must know about it, or else they are lying.").

Tbh I taste the hell out of black pepper but never noticed a flavor from cilantro. People's taste buds are just different. When someone tastes bad to someone else it might not just be an opinion, it might actually just taste different for them.

OP is probably using some pre ground pepper that's been artificially preserved and sat in a warehouse for a decade becoming flavorless before finally making it's way into a container and stores.

Pepper-crusted proteins (particularly beefs and fish)
Marinades/rubs/some brines
Freshly ground onto pastas, soups, and salads

Those are the top uses I feel pepper is suited for.

It's hard to avoid some aging in transit and storage, but the advantage of buying peppercorns is that when it does inevitably age, the surface area by which flavor can escape is significantly smaller.

Agreed. Pre-ground pepper, like pre-ground coffee, loses the aromatic compounds that give it a distinctive flavor over time.

Same here. Scrambled/over easy eggs also need pre or finely ground to avoid messing with texture.

Fresh ground for for salads, seasoning meat, or ketchup for fries though.
