I was recently thinking of getting my daughter a rifle for when she is able to hunt and for target practice (in 2 years so there is time for her to run all the safety and knowledge courses).

I found a great deal on a Mossberg Patriot (280 for the gun, basic scope (duplex cross hair) and case) which looks like a great deal.

Does anyone have experience with the mossberg patriots? I know they are pretty much the most basic model of rifle (no real frills or backup irons, but the scope is really all we would need). Are they reliable and not a bitch to clean?

I know Mossberg makes quality products. I own a 500 myself and have shot a 464 (it was a bit gimmicky but decent overall).

Thanks

That wasn't the question.

Sorry TC, I'm too casual to give you real advice.

You should use guns for personal protection, not killing innocent animals just because you felt like it.

Hunting is a legal activity that provides good food and home decor. Controlling the deer population improves the quality of life for the remaining deer with less competition over food and territory. Its no different than buying a hamburger or leather jacket. Youre just doing the wet work yourself.

Mossberg is pretty decent kit. Honestly modern firearms from most reputable companies nowadays are seldom going to let you down, and in many models the aftermarket is huge.
